I have run the QuickBooks update and restarted, but the red exclamation mark still appears in my reminders to ‘Restart Quickbooks and install updates.  I have done this several times now, but the alert will not clear.

The persistent "Restart QuickBooks" reminder is usually caused by a lack of admin permissions, a broken update file, or a Windows issue that fails to acknowledge the update is complete.

Since the current update file seems stuck, forcing QuickBooks to download a clean copy usually clears the alert. First, check whether your QuickBooks is on the latest release. Open it and press F2. If it's in the latest version but the red reminder is still present, it means the installation update isn't complete, so we need to restart it.

Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks completely.
  2. Right-click your QuickBooks 2024 icon and select Run as Administrator.
  3. Go to the Help menu at the top and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  4. Navigate to the Update Now tab.
  5. Check the Reset Update checkbox (this clears the old, stuck update files).
  6. Click Get Updates. Once the download finishes, restart QuickBooks and allow it to install.

Sometimes, old update tasks run silently in the background and block the new installation:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.
  2. Look for any processes named QBUpdate.exe or QBW32.exe.
  3. Right-click them and select End Task.
  4. Relaunch QuickBooks as an administrator and try the installation again.

Make sure your Windows operating system is fully updated. Pending Windows updates can often prevent QuickBooks 2024 from completing its installation process.
