How do I undo a bank reconciliation in QuickBooks Online (whole period vs one transaction, and can I do it without paying an accountant)? The fastest path depends on whether the reconciliation is still in progress or already finished. You can simply close an unfinished one without saving, and a finished one you undo either as a whole period. You need one of these user roles to undo a reconciliation: Primary admin, In-house accountant, or an accountant user with access to their client's company through QuickBooks Online Accountant. So yes, you can undo a whole month yourself without hiring anyone, as long as you are the primary admin or someone in your company has the In-house accountant role. If the reconciliation is still in progress - Go to All apps, then Accounting, then Reconcile.
- Choose the account and select Resume reconciling.
- Select the Save for later dropdown, then Close without saving, and confirm.
Nothing is changed; the session is cleared and the account is reset. If the reconciliation is completed: undo the whole period (recommended) The one-click, whole-period Undo is available to your Primary Admin, Accountant or to any user in your company who has the In-house accountant role. Once a user has one of these roles, the steps are: - Go to All apps, then Accounting, then Reconcile.
- Select History by account.
- Choose the account and date range.
- Find the reconciliation, and from the Action column select the dropdown, then Undo.
- Review the consequences in the confirmation window, then select the checkbox to acknowledge them.
- Select Undo reconciliation.
Heads up: Undoing a reconciliation changes your books, and one part of it can't be recovered: the reconciliation report and its attachments are permanently deleted. Download any attachments you want to keep before you undo. Reference: Undo an entire reconciliation in QuickBooks Online
If the reconciliation is completed: undo one transaction at a time If you'd rather not use the role, or only need to fix a few entries, unreconcile them individually: - Go to All apps, then Accounting, then Chart of accounts
- Find the account and select View register.
- Select the transaction (reconciled ones show R) to expand it.
- In the checkmark column, select the box until it's blank (it cycles R, then C, then blank).
- Select Save.
