QuickBooks Pro 2021 Desktop and Internet Explorer requirement

Last year I got a new Windows 10 laptop. Without getting into details, after I had installed QB Pro 2021 and turned it on, it asked me to install Internet Explorer (IE) 11.  Because of a configuration error from the laptop manufacturer, it was quite a feat to install IE 11. Nevertheless, I got it installed and my version of QB Pro worked.

I was getting ready to upgrade to Windows 11 when I remembered that problem. It turns out that IE will not be included but I can put Edge browser in IE compatibility mode. However, I really don't want to do that and want to use Edge in its "native" mode.

For the moment I am not going to upgrade to to Windows 11 (nor am I switching to QB online since it's more expensive overall than the desktop version).

So here is my question.

Is Intuit going to either REMOVE the dependency on IE (which is absolutely ridiculous to have that need for it to work) or are they going to make changes so that it will work with ANY browser?

In this day and I age I find it flabbergasting that Intuit would put so an OUTDATED requirement to run its app.

Thanks.

It's nice to see you posting your concern in the QuickBooks Community, @JoseGuerra. I'll share an insight to fix your query about using Internet Explorer with QuickBooks Desktop.

At the moment, Microsoft stopped updating Internet Explorer 10 (IE 10) in January 2016. That said, you must utilize the current version of Internet Explorer to ensure that everything is up-to-date.

Here's how to upgrade your Internet Explorer:

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Follow the steps for your Windows operating system to upgrade to Internet Explorer 11.
  3. Reopen QuickBooks Desktop.

Here's an article you can refer to for more details about upgrading IE 10 to open QBDT.

Please feel free to get in touch with me here if you have any additional questions about using this browser in QBDT. The Community always has your back. Have a great day!

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. However, that is not the issue I asked about. I have no interest in anything to do with updating or installing IE. I already stated that I did that last year and now I would like to know, as I mentioned in my post, whether or not "Intuit going to either REMOVE the dependency on IE (which is absolutely ridiculous to have that need for it to work) or are they going to make changes so that it will work with ANY browser?"

Thank you.

Thanks for getting back to us, JoseGuerra.

In QuickBooks Desktop, we still use Internet Explorer (IE) 11 (32-bit). We're aware that Microsoft has announced that it will no longer support this browser's updates. However, we'll continue using it until we receive updates from our engineers.

To receive recent updates from QuickBooks, it would be best to set IE 11 as your default web browser.

I also got an article for you that will help you more about setting Internet Explorer as a default web browser:

I'm just one post away if you need anything else in QuickBooks. Just add the details to your reply and I'll be there to address them for you. You have a good one

I appreciate your response. However, this changes things for me. I am not going to stop using Edge as it is a better browser than IE. So I will be looking at other solutions other than QB. I am still shocked and frustrated that Intuit will continue this vastly obsolete practice which in essence holds us hostage to not using the latest features from Microsoft, specifically Edge. I will not be using IE as my default browser.

Thanks anyway and please let your bosses know this: one customer may not make a big difference but a satisfied one tells three friends. An angry one tells 3,000.

We hope they will announce something new about IE 11 and Win 11 around May/June. We understand that they will not bother to resolve this issue with QBD 2019 or earlier versions.

I hope it's "we are dropping the requirement to use IE". It is SO lame to have that prerequisite to run ANY app for that matter.

I have version QBP 2021 by the way.

Thanks again for the update.

Hello there. I'm happy to share the update about using Internet Explorer (IE) with QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

For the time being, QBDT is still using IE as its default web browser . We'll have to continue using it until we receive new updates from our product engineers.

I would encourage you to keep your QBDT software updated to the latest release. This way, we can guarantee the program is running with the newest fixes and patches.

Also, to answer the most commonly asked questions about using IE with QBDT, I'd recommend checking out this article: Upgrade Internet Explorer to open QuickBooks Desktop.

Please don't hesitate to let me know in the comments if you have other concerns about data management and questions about using IE in QBDT. I'll gladly help. Take care, and I wish you continued success.

Now that microsoft has announced that ie is officially "dead", will we have alternatives to ie to use with QB Desktop or do we allow our software to be vulnerable to attacks through the non-supported avenue?

I was given a "warning" in my QB today that suggested

"To receive future security updates, we recommend updating your product to use our
new, supported internal browser."
What is this browser? What is the cost for using it? What does anyone know about it?

Welcome to the Community, Still Learning This Program.

Yes. We have a built-in browser that replaces Internet Explorer 11 in QuickBooks Desktop.

Our new custom browser was released on Jun 10, 2022 and are now available for all supported versions of QuickBooks Desktop. It's reliable and provides important security updates.

To ensure that you receive future security upgrades, simply update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.

Here's an article that you check to learn more about the internal browser's technical specifications: Use our built-in browser in QuickBooks Desktop.

Come back to us if you still have other questions about the built-in browser for QuickBooks. I'll be around if you need me. Have a wonderful day!

QuickBooks Pro 2021 Desktop and Internet Explorer requirement

I just posted this on another thread, but I am desperate for an answer so I'm posting it here as well.

I am locked out of my QB Premier 2021 program. I've been trying ALL DAY to get help and I'm exactly nowhere. The final straw: I just hung up from QB so-called Support and they said since I have a standalone version of QB and not a paid support version, they won't help me. !!!

The message I'm getting when I try to open QB says IE is turned off on my computer. I did make IE inactive on my computer a while back because I never use it, and it's now useless for every other purpose in the world (not to mention highly insecure). But now -- it's GONE. Just GONE. I can't turn it back on because it disappeared. But even though it's past the date of "retirement" QB demands I use it. And now there's not a single place on earth (according to Microsoft) where I can reinstall it. So now what QuickBooks? A couple of questions:

  1. From what I'm reading, it looks like even if I cared to purchase a newer version of QB (I don't, I'm beyond fed up with QB) it isn't fixed in the new ones either. Is that correct?
  2.  Why in the WORLD is QB so tied to a Microsoft product that it renders my accounting program completely useless? I'm trying to run a business here!
  3.  Shouldn't "support" be helping me out with this?

I can't even access QB now to do anything, including update my software (in the desperate hope it will change something - anything - to get me out of this mess). I am FURIOUS. I should be able to access QB without a partner involvement. You can cozy up to MS all you want, but let me access my data!

If anybody has any suggestions I'm willing to try them.

Can you update qb? They posted a new version a couple days ago that got rid of ie crapware and replaced it with an open source version of chrome.

It's half butched and locks up all the time but at least it kinda works if you never do anything that needs a browser

I can see the urgency of getting your issue resolved, @AmericanRV. That's why I'm here to share a few suggestions on how you can access your data with QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

QuickBooks recently released a new custom internal browser that replaces the Internet Explorer (IE) 11 browser. All our QBDT-supported versions (2020, 2021, and 2022) have already been using it since June 10, 2022.

For more details, please see this article: Use our built-in browser in QuickBooks Desktop.

If you're using an older version of QBDT and opt to continue using it, you'll need to have an IE installed on your computer for the system to run. With this, I'd recommend consulting an IT expert to do so.

On the other hand, if you're currently using a QBDT-supported version (without a subscription, like 2020 and 2021), you'll have to manually download the latest updates. This way, you'll receive the most recent critical updates and then get back to business and access your data in no time.

To do a manual update, here's how:

  1. Close your company files and QuickBooks.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu.
  3. Search for QuickBooks Desktop. Right-click the icon and select Run as administrator.
  4. While on the No Company Open screen, go to the Help menu and select Update QuickBooks DesktopQBDT Manual Update to Latest Release.PNG
  5. Go to the Options tab. Select Mark All and then select SaveQBDT Manual Update to Latest Release1.PNG
  6. Go to the Update Now tab and select the Reset Update checkbox.
  7. When you're ready, select Get UpdatesQBDT Manual Update to Latest Release2.PNG

You can also get updates directly from our website (please see the the screenshot below for your reference). To know more about this, you can refer to this article: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.

In case you choose to purchase a subscription to QBDT 2022, you can check out our Plans & Pricing page here: Your QuickBooks Desktop product.

Also, you may want to check out this article in case you need to know more about the features included in the QBDT 2022 release and how you can use them to benefit your business: What's new in QuickBooks Desktop 2022.

Please don't hesitate to keep me posted on how it goes in the comments below. If you have other concerns about the system updates of QBDT, I'm always here to help. Take care, @AmericanRV.

Which Release version do you mean? I updated to QBD 2021 R10 since June 13 and don't see any newer version available.

its in r10

https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/update-products/release-notes-quickbo...

which says they replaced the internal browser

https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/security-risk/use-built-browser-quick...

which implies they made a mystical custom browser, which is a load of bull- it's apparently an open-source version of chrome(ium) that is called cef sharp- which they implemented poorly to boot. How do i know this- when QB locks up if you check windows task manager you'll see a pile of subprocess under qb that say "CefSharp.BrowserSubprocess(32bit) and it won't let you kill them off individually instead you have to burn QB entirely.

Also- a little hint- when they open a new browser window- often the rocket scientists at intuit did soemthign wrong because the browser opens too big inside the QB window and the title bar is gone. Since there is no title bar there's no x to close it out and you get stuck. Hint- you can go to the left edge of the window and try to resize left/right. That will then force it to redraw with the title bar so you can get an x to close the window and go back to qB.

I'm glad they took all the YEARS that MS told them to update to make this change and test it so its so smooth. LOL

looks like there's a link to manually download and install updates since you probably can't open QB without the IE crapware.

Thanks for joining us on this thread, @meisne

I'll share some information on how you can switch away from the Internet Explorer (IE) browser to other browsers in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

IE is no longer supported by Microsoft as of June 15, 2022. However, you can now switch to our new custom browser. All you need to do is update your QBDT to the latest release.

You can also follow the steps laid out by my colleague, Rea_M, above to manually update your QBDT software.

Moreover, using our built-in browser in QBDT is an article you can read to learn more about the internal browser's technical characteristics.

Additionally, you might want to check our QuickBooks Help site to find articles and guides that can help you perform your QBDT tasks.

Please let me know how it goes after updating your QBDT software in the comments below. I'll be around to help you if you have any other concerns. Take care!

Thanks to everyone for your responses. As I mentioned in other responses, I managed to install IE 11 on Windows 10 (even though something in the original configuration of my laptop did not allow me to do so) and was functioning fine that way. My main concern was, and continues to be, that Intuit would depend on a specific browser for it to function.

I know that problem is now solved with Intuit's own browser BUT that is a bad architecture. NO application should depend on a given browser to function.

With that said, I hope future versions of QB Pro Desktop do away with that design.

Thanks for getting back with the Community, JoseGuerra.

I can certainly understand how QuickBooks not using a browser of any kind could be useful and have submitted a suggestion about it as of today.

You can also submit your own feature requests while using QuickBooks.

Here's how:

  1. In the top menu bar, go to Help, Send Feedback Online, then Product Suggestion....
  2. Choose a Type of Feedback and Product Area (optional) from your available drop-down menus.
  3. Enter any suggestions/feedback in the Here is my suggestion: field.
  4. If you'd like, include your name/email in the My name is: (optional) and My e-mail address is: (optional) fields.
  5. Select Send Feedback.

Your feedback's definitely valuable to Intuit. It will be reviewed by our Product Development team and considered in future updates. You can stay up-to-date with the latest news about your product by reviewing Intuit's Product Updates webpage.

Please feel welcome to post a reply here or create a new thread if there's ever any questions. The Community's always here to help. Have a great day!

I can't update the program because I can't open the program. I did a clean install with the latest update and still get the "You can't open quickbooks because you don't have internet explorer" I've been messing with this for 7 hours today. It's going to be great when all my historical client data cannot be accessed because quickbooks is out of date. So now I get to do a virtual machine with an old version of windows just to access the same stuff I've been accesing for 10 years. Beyond frustrated with Intuit at this point.
