Problem Importing Inventory Items

Forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask this.  But I am having a problem importing my inventory items into Quickbooks Pro Desktop 2020.

I am using the Advanced Import feature and have items in an Excel file.  I have the mapping set up correctly.  I have some Non Inventory Parts that imported fine from my spreadsheet.  When I imported those items I did not specify mappings for the Asset, COGS or Sales accounts.  But when I try and import Inventory parts, I get an error log saying that I must specify the Asset, COGS and Sales accounts.  Once I specify those columns in the mapping, and I click Import, I get the error "Unit of Measure is currently turned off, and the mapping you selected was created when Unit of Measure was turned on".

In Inventory Preferences, the UOM option is grayed out and to my knowledge was never available.

Quickbooks support was unable to answer.  All they did was sent me info I already read about how to import items.

Anyone have this problem?  I'm not going to re-type 1,200 items.

Explore the importer tool.

The item list template to be import into QBD. UM is not the mandatory field

Item NameItem TypeIs ActiveSales DescriptionPurchase DescriptionTax CodeAccount/Income AccountExpense/COGS AccountAsset AccountCostPreferred VendorPrice or %Reorder PointManuf Part NumberUnit of MeasureMax

None of the aforementioned solutions worked.  I went into the Paste from Excel screen and formatted the columns to match my spreadsheet.  I pasted 1292 rows in that screen and it worked.  So I now have my inventory in.  In case anyone reads this post for the same issue I had, don't bother with trying to get the import to work for Inventory parts (non-inventory parts worked fine).  Do the copy/paste option.

You don't need to say sorry, @H2TackleOutdoors because you're on the right track, to ask any questions regarding your QuickBooks account.

I appreciate reading our article about the importing process. To get relieved of the error, let's try to import your Inventory item to the sample file in QuickBooks Desktop. This way you'd know if your company file is damaged.

Here's how to get a sample file:

  1. Click the File menu.
  2. Select Close Company.
  3. Hit the open a sample file drop-down arrow, then pick a file.

If you can successfully import the inventory item using the sample file, go back to your company account and Verify/Rebuild utilities from the File menu. Make sure to create a back up of your company file. For detailed steps, check out this article: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.

After that, turned on the Unit of Measure by following the steps below: Use single and multiple units of measure for items.

Once done, re-import the transactions to check if you still get an error. However, if the error still prompts, I suggest contacting again to our Desktop support. They have tools to examine what is the main cause of the error and create an investigation if needed.

For future reference on how to adjust the total value of the products in Desktop, please browse this article: Adjust your inventory quantity or value in QuickBooks Desktop.

Let know how it goes by clicking the Reply button below. I'm always here to help. Take good care!

I opened the sample company fine.  The sample company was set to use single UOM.  I tried to import my data and it said I needed a UOM set.

I dont use UOM, because I can't.  I can not use UOMs in the Pro edition.

I verified and rebuilt my data as you instructed, with no errors found.

I can not turn on UOM to import my items because it is not available in the Pro edition.

This seems like a bug to me.  You should still be able to import Inventory Parts even though you do not (cannot) use the UOM option.  It did allow me to import my non-inventory parts fine.  But once I specify a COGS, or Income account it pops up the error about the UOM being turned off.

I appreciate you getting back to us and performing the troubleshooting steps shared by my colleague above, @H2TackleOutdoors.

You're right. Importing inventory items can be imported without using the UOM option. Let's first re-sort the inventory list to get your inventory items imported in your QuickBooks Pro Desktop 2020 successfully. Then, import the inventory items again.

Here's how:

  1. In your QuickBooks Desktop, click the Lists menu
  2. Select Item List.
  3. Click the arrow beside Item, then select Re-sort List.
  4. Hit OK to confirm.

Here's an article you can read for more details: Re-sort lists.

Once done, you can now import your inventory items in QBDT. For your reference, you can check out this article for more guidance: Import or export MS Excel files.

You might also want to read this article to know how to adjust inventory quantity or value in QBDT.

I'm also having this issue on Enterprise 2020 with UoM turned OFF and ON (it was never turned on to begin with).

Not sure how my mapping was "created when UoM was turned on", because it was never turned on...

This is definetly a bug!

Thanks for looping in, @greens.

Have you tried performing the steps provided by my colleagues to get past the message prompt? If so and still getting the same problem, I highly recommend contacting our Customer Care Team for further assistance.

They can do a screen-sharing session to check what's causing the pop-up when importing inventory items. Here's how to reach our phone support:

  1. On your QuickBooks Homepage, go to the Help menu.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Tap the Contact us button.

In the meantime, I recommend following the solution shared by H2TackleOutdoors to successfully import the file to QuickBooks.

Please let me know how the call goes and if there's anything else you need. I'm always here to help. Have a good night!

Same problem I'm having since updating to QB Enterprise 2020. It's a bug. Please fix.

This has been an ongoing issue since December 2019. I can't believe it has not been patched yet!

Dear Quickbooks Team

This is a new member to Quickbooks. Downloaded Desktop Enterprises for 30days Trial yesterday.

I am also facing the same issue in loading inventory (U/M issue). Other service items are easily imported.
My inventory is thousands of items with colons separation and I an unable to copy/paste too.
Please help soon.

I have wasted hours and hours on this... I think its just a bug in 2020 that has not been addressed.

It worked on 2019 for me.. but not on 2020.  :(

June 18, 2020

Quickbooks team....If I already upgraded to premier 2020 and updated company file to new version, can I downgrade the company file to 2019? And use the premier 2019 version with this functionality still working?

This is critical for my business

@940alex

When you open the company file on QB 2020, it would create a QBB file of your 2019 version. You should find it. Otherwise, consider purchasing a 3rd party downgrade service. Some data will be vanish to avoid the corruption when running back on QB 2019.

June 29, 2020

Intuit Quickbooks - Stop being irresponsible and block new downloads of this broken down piece of crap, they need to be directed to the 2019 version only until you have a working version of 2020 without the bugs, I understand a few small bugs but this is literally keeping businesses frojm performing, I cannot believe how much this software costs versus the level of service that comes with it, you people are criminals.

We have QB Enterprise 2020 and received the same UOM error message after trying to import our items back to QB. I have 12,000 items that I need price adjustments.

The Add/Edit Multiple List entries does not work with that many items. The sorting on QB doesn't match with the Excel sorting method.

The IIF files don't work either. Most of our items are assemblies and we spent a ton of hours trying fit our new prices to the IIF Files. Only to receive error messages at the end of several attempts.

Please help. Our customers already received the new price list months ago. We need them updated on QB ASAP.

Hi there, @MLeandro.

We have an investigation currently in place concerning an unexpected error when importing items list from excel. Our product engineers are now prioritizing this so you can get back to your business as soon as possible.

If you haven't reached out to our customer support yet, I recommend giving them a call. This way, they can add your account details to the list of affected users. This will also help them in notifying once the issue is fixed.

Here's how you can reach out to them:

  1. Go to the Help icon and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Click Contact Us.
  3. Write your concerns in the description box, then select Continue.
  4. Select which one of the support options you'd like to use.

Just a heads up, due to COVID-19, we have limited staffing and have reduced our support hours to 6 AM-6 PM PT Monday-Friday. We will resume normal hours as soon as possible.

Please check out our support hours to ensure that we address your concerns on time.

In the meantime, it would be best to use the standard method of importing item list to QuickBooks. This way, you can update your items price list while waiting for the issue to be resolved.

Don't hesitate to tag my name in the comment section below if you have other concerns or questions. I'm always ready to help.

Any update on fixing this issue?

Or any update when intuit will be releasing qb desktop 2021

I wish I could make it better, @940alex.

As of the moment, our engineering team is still working on this on-going investigation and they haven't released any updates yet. Don't worry, we'll be sending you an email message containing all the updates once they're available.

With the release of QuickBooks 2021, we're also unable to provide the specific timeframe as to when it will be available. You can consider keeping an eye on QuickBooks 2020 updates as it has an option to upgrade for the 2021 version.

Lastly, here are articles you might want to check for references while working with your business in QuickBooks: Manage Inventory for QuickBooks Desktop.

Please let us know in the comments if you have any other questions.

I don't know about you guys but how about we stop for a second and think about this. Should Intuit keep releasing new broken versions of their software or stop F*ing around and fix the broken software that they broke when releasing version 2020?

We now have version 2021, Why? Why the heck are we releasing new versions of software that are broken? WHY?!?

This is exactly where you are going to start losing with so many new pieces of software available that are literally marketing to people feeling let down by the one piece of software that small and medium businesses cannot actually do without.

The more you flaunt your market share without taking on the responsibility of maintaining what you have made and relying on customer service agents that are constantly yelled at and berated by the data services department for only doing what they've been told to do through the myriad of mixed messages they get from management and data who both seem to be saying completely different things - you guys are courting disaster and it really doesn't seem like any one there actually cares at all. I'm not even asking for touchy feely response I'm asking for someone to take responsibility for their scew ups and fixing those screw ups befur you actually move on to a new version of broken software. I pay way too much for this kind of crap from this level of company.
