Question

Scheduled backups are NOT working in Windows 10 after upgrading to the latest Creators Update, 1709. Task needs to be created with “Configure for” set to “Windows 10”.

When creating a backup schedule in QuickBooks a task is created under task schedule as it always has been.  However, after installing Windows 10 Creators Update 1709 the backup task now fails.

Reason : QuickBooks is setting "Configure for" to "Windows Server 2003, Windows XP or Windows 2000".

Workaround : Manually change "Configure for" to "Windows 10".

See the attached screenshots for how the task is created by QuickBooks, the error returned and the setting required to get the task to work.

This is a major issue as the majority of users will assume their backups are working since the scheduled was created successfully in QuickBooks.

QuickBooks needs to detect the OS and modify this setting accordingly when creating the task.

kaydjs,

The information provided by Intuit support is NOT the solution (as indicated previously in this very thread).

Not sure why you cannot see the attachments from the original post but I am pasting again for you along with the notes.

Potomacpctech thank you for your reply. I tried on Tuesday afternoon to update the compatability mode to Windows 10. However, the highest version for my to choose on my Quickbooks is Windows 8. I do not know why this is happening. Do you have any ideas? I am very thankful for your help! kaydjs

I appreciate the response but you are grossly understating the significance of this issue.  It is a very serious bug, not an enhancement or potential Improvement.

This bug guarantees in no uncertain terms that any QuickBooks user running Windows 10 build 1709 or later will have their backup fail even though QuickBooks indicates it has been configured and scheduled properly.

I would think for an issue as serious as this that deals with data Integrity, you would open a support ticket, provide me the number and keep the ticket open until the bug is addressed.

I don't think a proper solution is to have me complete feedback forms that likely go into a black hole and are not looked at at all or in no reasonable time frame.

It´s March 2019, and this bug still exists in the current QB !

Btw. it´s not only an issue on Windows 10, also Windows Server 2016.

We're still working on getting this issue fixed, wfus.

Right now, we do not have an estimated time frame to resolve this issue with the scheduled backups. We have an available workaround though, and that is to manually backup your company file.

Here's how:

  1. Click File in the upper left-hand corner.
  2. Select Back Up Company, and then choose Create Local Backup.
  3. Click the radio button for Local backup, and then click Next.
  4. Choose the location where you'd like to save the backup copy.
  5. Click Next in the Create Backup window, and then click Finish.

I'd also recommend getting in touch with us so we can add your company details to the investigation. This way, you'll be notified when we roll out a permanent fix. To get our contact number, just scroll up from this thread and follow the steps given by my colleagues.

I appreciate your patience on this. Please let me know if you need more help with QuickBooks.

Scheduled backups have been broken in Windows 10 for ALL Windows 10 users for 1 1/2 years now.  A core requirement for any accounting system is backup and in 1 1/2 years the developer of by far the leading accounting product in the world has been unable to fix what is a MAJOR, SYSTEM CRIPPLING issue.  This is absurd.  You "solution" to run a manual backup is almost as absurd.

I will repeat again, as I have been since identifying this issue and HANDING INTUIT THE FIX 1 1/2 YEARS AGO.

ALL QUICKBOOKS PRO USERS RUNNING WINDOWS 10 IN THE ENTIRE WORLD ARE UNABLE TO RUN A SCHEDULED BACKUP BECAUSE OF THIS BUG.

QB support is lackluster at best.  Since it has the bulk of the market share it just does not care about supporting its customers.

How many users are under the false assumption that their information is being automatically backed up?  Many will find out when their computer fails and they attempt to retrieve their backup file only to find out QB has NOT been performing automatic backups.

The real kicker is the fact that QB has known about this issue for almost two years and has not delivered a solution.

the screenshots are not attached that I can see.  Can you please repost the solution as I have the same problem.  Thank you so much!

Hi there, skeeter57.

My colleague, @JamesDuanT, reiterated one of the workaround given by other Community participants. He mentioned that you'll just have to make sure the Configure for field is Windows 10. Here are the screenshots that he also gave.

If you still can't see the screenshot, I suggest logging in to your Community account through a private browser. You can also use other browsers like Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, or Mozilla Firefox, to read through the thread.

Keep me posted on how this worked on your end. Thanks in advance.

This does not work for me.  I can change the "configure for" to  windows 10, but then it asks for the user name and password.  When I enter that, it says:  "An error has occurred for task __________.  Error message:  The specified account name is not valid."

Any more help?

THANK YOU!!!!  THANK YOU!!!!  THANK YOU!!!!

I have been fighting with this issue for over a week.  Quickbooks will schedule the backups, but they don't run.  They appear in Task Scheduler, but if you try to "Run" (from Task Scheduler), it comes back with some error saying "The task no longer exists.....", but clearly it does!  I had tried deleting, recreating, multiple times!

Seeing Intuit's responses, and lack of action is pathetic.  Additionally, Intuit refuses to share any information on their "AutoBackupEXE.exe" task so that we can't just configure our own backups.

I just installed QB Pro 2020 and this is STILL an issue.  Part of me feels that they are doing this on purpose to force users into QuickBooks Online.

The rant: I don't think Intuit is very interested in fixing this. At this point there are several newer versions, and while I agree that this seems like a simple fix and should have been addressed years ago, clearly that isn't happening. I suppose they'd much rather sell you a newer version...

The solution(ish): After wrestling with this for a few hours, I finally decided to just set the scheduled task to run during business hours, and selected "Run only when user is logged on", and "Configure for: Windows 10"... This seems to work. It will show the backup progress under existing windows, but doesn't interrupt anything that I can tell, including whatever you happen to be doing in QuickBooks at the time of the backup. And it sure beats hoping that someone will remember to back up manually.

What a joke.  Just installed QB 2022, and the problem still exists.  Windows 2003, XP, 2000 aren't even supported my MS anymore and this setting is still how QB configures the scheduled backups.

Talk about an out of touch company.

Nearly 2 years later, this post was super helpful for us running an automatic backup on Windows Server 2019.  The default in the Task Scheduler was Windows Server 2003.  👍

Well, there are a variety of techniques to get QuickBooks Scheduled Backup Not Working. But running the verify and  Rebuild Data Utility tool is one of the most successful and convenient ways to restrict such an issue. Here's how:

  • At first, open the QuickBooks Desktop application and head to the File menu.
  • Now, select the Utilities tab and then tap on the Verify data option.
  • After that, go to the option that states QuickBooks scan all the company files & data, and search for the damage.
  • Later on, you might get a pop-up saying your data has lost integrity. Close the message tab and press the File tab again.
  • Move your cursor to the Utilities sections and select Rebuild data.
  • Furthermore, press OK at the Backup Company Data pop-up window and get a backup of your company filer data on the desktop.
  • Next,  the QuickBooks Rebuild Data tool will repair the damage in the company file.
  • Once you see the message Rebuild has Completed, you would have to hit the OK tab and try to schedule the automatic backups once again.
