You can't completely remove a vehicle from QuickBooks Self-Employed if it has trips recorded against it, as the system must preserve that data for your historical tax records. However, you can hide it from your active list by marking it as inactive.

The catch is that QuickBooks will not let you deactivate a primary vehicle, which includes your only vehicle if you have just one listed. To bypass this, you need to add or select a different vehicle to take its place as the primary first. Once that's done, you'll be able to switch the old one to inactive.

First, you'll want to add a temporary or a new vehicle to take its place:

  1. Go to All apps, select Expenses & Bills, and choose Mileage.
  2. Select the dropdown arrow next to Add trip and pick Manage vehicles.
  3. Select Add vehicle and enter the new vehicle's information.
  4. In the Tax info section, choose how you want to record your mileage, then hit Save.

Next, you'll have to set that new vehicle as the primary:

  1. From that same Manage vehicles screen, select the new vehicle you just created.
  2. Turn on the Set as primary vehicle switch, then hit Save.

Finally, you can deactivate your old vehicle:

  1. Select your old vehicle from the list.
  2. Now that it's no longer marked as the primary, the Vehicle no longer in use option will appear.
  3. Select that option to officially mark it as inactive and hide it from your view.
