Welcome to the Community, hlund.

To better understand your concern, could you please clarify the issue you encountered when setting up your OT tracking? Have you noticed any error messages or unexpected behaviors? Any additional details you can add would be greatly appreciated.

In the meantime, let's use the QuickBooks Tool Hub to run some troubleshooting steps. This tool is designed to help resolve common system issues efficiently.

You can follow the steps below:

  1. Exit QuickBooks.
  2. Download the latest version of the QuickBooks Tool Hub and save it in an accessible location like your Downloads folder or desktop. If you've downloaded it before, check if it's up-to-date by selecting the Home tab located at the bottom menu.
  3. Run the downloaded QuickBooksToolHub.exe.
  4. Then, complete the installation following the on-screen prompts.
  5. Double-click the icon on your desktop to launch the Tool Hub.

If you don't see the icon on your desktop, you can try using the Windows search function to locate the program.

You can also check this page for further information: Run Quick Fix my Program from the QuickBooks Tool Hub.

We do not need boilerplate Quickbooks help.  I keep getting aborted out of Quickbooks when trying to process payroll.  I need a workaround or fix by Monday as I have payrolls to process by Monday because of the holiday week.

I have tried what you said and it does not work.

Please go to your tech department and have them try to run payroll in a file and they will see what the issue is.

Your comments section will blow up with everyone having an issue on Monday.  I was able to process payrolls earlier today so it is this OT tracking update that is causing the issue.

Thank you for reaching out and letting us know about challenges you're facing, Madeleine. I understand your frustration and how stressful this situation must be, especially with payroll deadlines fast approaching, Madeleine34608.

Issues like this happens due to a corrupted hard drive, damaged program files, issues with your QuickBooks Desktop installation or even a problem with your Windows operating system. Since you've already tried the troubleshooting steps provided by my colleague @JaneDave_I without success, let's proceed to additional steps that will fix the issue.

One effective solution is to run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic tool from the QuickBooks Tool Hub. This tool helps automatically detect and repair errors related to Microsoft components the QuickBooks relies on.

Here's how:

  1. Open the QuickBooks Tool Hub if it's not already open.
  2. In the Tool Hub, select Program Problems.
  3. Select QuickBooks Program Diagnostic Tool. Let the tool run. It can take up to 20 minutes.
  4. When the tool finishes, restart your computer and relaunch QuickBooks.

If the problem continues, rename the QBWUSER.ini file. This will erase the list of your previously opened company files. Therefore, you need to re-open your company file manually.

To rename the file:

  1. Open the folder where the QBWUSER.ini file is saved:  Users[Your user name]AppDataLocalIntuitQuickBooks [year]
If you can't see the folder, you might need to enable hidden files and folders.
  2. Right-click the QBWUSER.ini file and select Rename.
  3. Add .old at the end of the file name (as in QBWUSER.ini.old).
  4. Rename the EntitlementDataStore.ecml file.
  5. Reopen QuickBooks Desktop.

If the program opens after renaming either QBWUSER.ini or EntitlementDataStore.ecml, attempt to open a sample company file.

If the sample company file opens but your own file does not, try copying your company file to a different location (preferably a local folder rather than a network location) and open it from there. If this works, the issue may be related to a damaged folder or incorrect folder permissions.

If you still can’t access your company file, your company file may be damaged. In this case, restore an earlier backup of the file and try opening it again.

If the sample company file doesn’t open or QuickBooks still won’t start, the QuickBooks installation itself may be damaged and will need to be repaired or reinstalled.

If you need further assistance or guidance while running the tool, feel free to contact us. We'll be more than happy to help you.

I am having the same problem. Were you able to get yours fixed?

December 20, 2025

We are having the same issue as described below.  You answer the questionaire,  I have tried both YES and NO and it takes you to a finish button and it boots you out of Quickbooks completely.  We are clicking on  create Schedule Payroll when this questionaire pops up.

Our payroll clerk set up the qualified ot tracking in QB enterprise as OT after 40hrs/week.

We pay OT at over 8 hrs/day and/or 40 hrs a week.

How do I correct this set up?   And how does it affect payrolls if I don't correct it?

Hi, BisHeat and Marriane.

We appreciate you for reaching out and sharing your concerns regarding the new Qualified Overtime feature in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Payroll. I’m here to help provide guidance and ensure your payroll processes run smoothly.

To start, please ensure that your QBDT version and the payroll tax table are updated to the latest release before running your payroll with the new qualified overtime.

Once it's updated, you can then proceed with processing your payroll normally in single-user mode.

For Marianne’s case, the current setup categorizes all overtime over 40 hours/week as Qualified Overtime, which differs from your company’s policy of paying overtime after 8 hours/day or 40 hours/week. Federal guidelines only recognize weekly overtime exceeding 40 hours as Qualified Overtime eligible for tax deductions, while daily overtime falls under Company Overtime and isn’t tax-deductible.

Please refer to this article for more details about how the new Qualified Overtime affects QuickBooks Payroll: Impact of the No Tax on Overtime provision to QuickBooks Payroll.

To properly correct the setup, we recommend consulting an accounting professional to ensure compliance with IRS guidelines and accurate tracking of Qualified Overtime. They can tailor your payroll system to align with federal rules and your company’s policy, minimizing audit risks and ensuring proper reporting.

Let us know if you have further concerns.

Yes our payroll process showed up with Warning and only processes part of our employees and now won’t process the rest.
