Question

QBWUSER.INI

Quickbooks Pro 2024 Desktop crashes for one Windows Domain User whichever computer he uses. Deleting the QBWUSER.INI file lets him run Quickbooks successfully ONE TIME! If he quits Quickbooks and starts it again, it crashes. When he deletes the QBWUSER.INI file again, he can run it successfully until the next time.

This doesn't happen to anyone else. Anyone else can use any computer, even his, and Quickbooks works perfectly.

I even created a new Domain User, but it happens with the new user as well.

I followed all the diagnostics for Quickbooks, and even spent 2 hours on the phone with Quickbooks Support, and was told that it's a Windows problem, not a Quickbooks problem, so she couldn't help me.

So far, it works if the user keeps deleting the QBWUSER.INI file, but this is absurd. Can someone PLEASE tell me what the problem is, so I can fix it.

Hello there, Jay. I understand you have been dealing with this, and why you feel like this is an absurd situation to be stuck in.

When you delete the QBWUSER.INI file and it works until the next time you close the program, it tells us that QuickBooks is trying to save its preferences when it shuts down, but it is being blocked by your Windows settings.

Since this happens to specific domain users even on different computers, this suggests that your company's network folder redirection or security policies are getting in the way.

Instead of deleting, let’s rename the file. This clears your list of recently opened company files, so you will need to open your company file manually the first time you launch the program after these steps.

  1. Open the folder where the QBWUSER.ini file is saved.
  2. Right-click the QBWUSER.ini file and select Rename. Change it to QBWUSER.ini.old.
  3. Rename the EntitlementDataStore.ecml file.
  4. Reopen QuickBooks Desktop.

If the program runs successfully, proceed to open a sample company file and copy your file to a different folder. Open it from the new location. If you can open your file, the problem may be due to a damaged folder or incorrect folder permissions.

If you can't sign into your file even after that, your company file is most likely damaged. Try to restore an earlier backup of that file instead.

If the issue persists, follow solutions 4 and 5 of this article: QuickBooks Desktop won't open.
