Reconciling Account

I really messed up last year's reconciliation so I went through and unreconciled everything. As I attempted to start the reconciliation process, my Beginning Balance was off by $1,638.26. I tried to correct the problem with a journal entry of $8,210.86 but QB is not showing it as the Beginning Balance.  The Journal Entry was To Bank -- credit $8,210.86  and Opening Balance Equity  --debit $8,210.86.  What did I do wrong?

Let's fix the beginning balance so you can reconcile your bank accounts, @hammerherb.

If you've unreconciled previous reconciliations, it will change the ending balance and affect the beginning balance of your next reconciliation.

To fix it, you can check your bank register and verify if you have transactions that you left unreconciled.

You'll have to manually tag them as reconciled so you won't have any issues with your account balance the next time you do a reconciliation.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Accounting tab and proceed to the Chart of Accounts tab.
  2. Select the bank account that you're having discrepancy and from the Action column, select  View register.
  3. Check your transactions.
  4. In the reconcile status column (indicated by a checkmark), repeatedly select the top line of the transaction to change the status of the transaction.
    • - Cleared from the bank
    • - Reconciled
    • Blank - Not cleared or reconciled

You can follow this reference for more information: Fix beginning balance issues if you've reconciled the account in the past QuickBooks Online.

After fixing the beginning balance, you can now reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online. If you'd encounter an error during your reconciliation, here's how to fix issues when you're reconciling accounts in QuickBooks Online.

Also, I suggest checking with your accountant or tax advisor with the accounts that you use when creating a journal entry.

Let me know if there's anything that I can assist you with your bank reconciliation. I'm always glad to help in any way I can. Have a great rest of the day!
