Quickbooks Desktop Freezing Up

I have having severe issues with my QB freezing up when I am using it.  It seems like I have the same issue running reports or entering transactions.  My file size is around 80MB, so I don't think that's the problem.  Any ideas from anyone?  The only thing I can see that may be an issue is that I store my company file on a jump drive so that I can access it on multiple computers.

Any help is appreciated!  I'm about to lose my mind!

Have you already checked the article that @MorganB provided? If so and you are still having the same issue I can provide another troubleshooting step that may help fix this issue.

We'll want to run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool (QBInstall Tool). This will help us identify any component issues related to your QuickBooks Desktop. Here's how:

1. Download the QuickBooks Install DiagnosticTool.

2. When prompted, save the file to the local Desktop.

3. Close any open programs and run the QBInstall Tool.
Note: It may take up to 20mins to complete, depending on your internet speed and computer's performance.

4. Restart the computer after running the tool to ensure the components are properly updated.

Please refer to this article for more information: QuickBooks Desktop won't open, has stopped working, or not responding.

If the problem continues, you'll need to try other solutions provided in the article above.

Hey there acagwinsc,

Welcome to the Community. I'm happy to offer my assistance to keep your account from freezing up.

I first recommend clearing the cache within Internet Explorer, which connects to your Desktop account. The cache can become bogged down with excess data, therefore slowing down the system. Steps on the clearing process can be found here: https://community.intuit.com/articles/1145697-how-do-i-clear-the-temporary-internet-files-and-cache.

Additionally, you may want to consider rebuilding and verifying your data in case there's any damage. More information on doing so can be found in this article: https://community.intuit.com/articles/1501314-resolve-data-damage-on-your-company-file.

This will get you back up and running. Keep up the great work and please let me know if you have any other questions.

I am having more and more freeze ups with QuickBooks Desktop Accountant 2018.  Can't pin it down to one thing, but it is very frustrating and time consuming to use task manager which sometimes will resolve the frozen window so I can restart QB and other times having to restart the pc.

We too are having difficulty. Desktop version 2018 - we just updated, one computer works the other is freezing just after the file is logged into.

Hey there, @taggerwear

Have you had a chance to try the steps provided by @MorganB, and @AlcaeusF? If you have and you're still having issues, allow me to provide another alternative. QuickBooks has the ability to compress your company file into a portable copy. This file format is easier to transfer via email or through an external storage device. This also helps to fix latency issues within the file. To do this, please follow the steps below:

Create a portable company file

  • From File in the upper left-hand corner, click Create Copy.
  • Choose Portable company file then Next.
  • Select the location where you want to save the portable copy.
  • Click Save and OK.

Restore portable company file

  • From File in the upper left-hand corner, click Open or Restore Company.
  • Choose Restore a portable file then Next.
  • Select the portable copy (.qbm) then Open.
  • Read through the Where do you want to restore the file? page then select Next.
  • Choose the location where you want to restore your portable file.
Note: You can change the name of the portable file to prevent it from overwriting your existing file.
  • Select Save.

Note: you may need to reattach any documents you had attached before creating a portable copy. You can find more information on that here.

Just in case you need it, I'm attaching the article that goes over portable files here. If you're still experiencing performance issues with your company file, there may yet be something else going. Once you have a moment to try out these steps, comment back with your results. I'll be on standby here waiting for your response.

My Quickbook freezes up when I email invoices. I heard there should be an update to fix it, but I haven't had any updates lately. Has anyone heard about this?

Hello there, @Dlroyal.

You can use the QuickBooks Refresher Tool to perform a mini repair of your QuickBooks Desktop.

Here's how:

  1. Close all QuickBooks Desktop version.
  2. Download the QuickBooks Refresher Tool.
  3. Save the file on your desktop.
  4. Run the QBRefresher tool.
  5. Re-open QuickBooks Desktop.

If the issue persists, you can follow the additional steps outlined in this article: Solutions for when QuickBooks stops working.

From there, you shouldn't have any further issues after running the tool.

Please let us know if you have any other questions with QuickBooks Desktop. We're always here to help.

I had the problem as well.  It was a lot of different versions (changing the date on the time sheet, opening the check register), but the consistency was this:  Opening a new window in QB 2019 desktop pro, and having the program running on my 2nd monitor (which was a tv and was not the primary monitor).   When I keep the program running on the primary monitor, i had no issues.

When I first upgraded to Quickbooks 2021 Pro I couldn't get into my Bank feeds.  I have since been able to login and do my banking, but now I'm freezing up when I leave the Bank feed.  At this point I can't do anything, and need to use my Task Manger to close Quickbooks because it is totally locked up.  Any suggestions?

Hello there, @Mr Gee. Welcome to the Community. I'm happy to offer my assistance to keep your account from freezing up.

Let’s run the QuickBooks Refresher Tool to fix minor issues with the software. Make sure to end all the processes running in the background before performing the steps below.

  4. Open QuickBooks again.

If the issue persists, run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool. This will automatically diagnose and fix issues with the program's Microsoft components. Here's how:

  1. Download the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool and save it to the locate desktop.
  2. Close all open programs and run the Tool.
  3. Once done, restart the computer to ensure the components are correctly updated.

I sure hope that my Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2019 is not freezing up all the time because support for it has stopped and to upgrade means paying a monthly fee instead of just being able to do a one-time purchase for the upgraded program. That would be wrong. I tried all the fixes and nothing is helping. Seems to be a big problem out there, you would think there would be a download available to fix the problem.

I have quickbooks 2023 and it does it too. Don't upgrade. I am thinking it has to do with the Windows version, but not sure. Intuit isn't doing anything to resolve it either...

October 19, 2023

Well Tuesday was interesting. While I am posting my questions I get a call on my clients phone regarding the 2023 Quickbooks Desktop and its from QB PRO (Ironically, I had done a survey they sent me from the help I had received the week before). . Well the Intuit Representative tells me his name is SID and even spells it for me. He states he needs to come into my computer to see what is going on with the Desktop 2023 through Logmein123. I asked why he couldn't just come into the computer using Glance and he says he really needs to use Logmein123 to look at the file but will not be able to maniupulate my computer (I should know better as I use LOGMEIN myself, but I have to be the remote in order to make changes on someone elses computer.   I agree to let him come into my computer (I am not sure why I let him come into my new computer at this clients because the last time I did this in 2013 I had nothing but problems with my computer at this same clients office). When he comes in his name is Spencer now so I question it and he says he told me his name was Spencer and I should have hung up right then but I didn't. So he asks me to go into the reconciliation and demonstrate what is happening and I do this like 3 different times. Then he asks me to update the quickbooks and what does it say on the update screen afterwords (which nothing updates). So "Spencer" then tells me that the update is not happening correctly so he asked me to do it again. Then he states that since the updates are not working that it has to do with my file so I asked if I should go into utiilities to update the data and he says no. He then pulls up a screen with different tabs on it and then a dos screen appears and he starts spouting off what is wrong with the quickbooks but was talking so fast I can't keep up with what he is saying. I tell him that when I go into the QB Tool hub and go into fix the PDF it actually brings up the same screen but references "Microsoft 10" in the verbage so I think it is something to do with QB and Microsoft because I have Microsoft 11 on this new computer but Microsoft 10 on the Home office computer. He then states the Intuit can fix my problem but i have to agree to pay for support (which I thought was free with QB 2023) if I agree to pay $15 per MB (based on the file size file size) or $2000 for unlimited support. I can't remember if I hung up first or disconnected the logmein123, but at this point I restarted my computer. So now I am really leary and call the phone number back and an Edward answers as QB Pro. I only work in this clients 1 day a week so when I go back I will work with the IT person to tell her what happened and see what the necessary steps are to secure my computer in case this guy was not who he said he was because the QB Rep the week before used the Glance within QB to help me - not Logmein. This experience is more than concerning to me....

Bottom line is QB 2023 and the freezing is still happening and no I haven't downloaded 2024 yet either.... I have went from 2022 to 2023 in the last couple of months and now need 2024???? Wow.... so every time a new version comes out we have to switch to the new version???

I am having this problem with QB desktop 2023. Was on the phone with support for 3 hours last week with no resolution. When I am in my own office where I have Windows 10 I have no problem with freezing but still have problems printing the reconciliation so I have to go into reports, banking previous and select the reconciliation, but I will only get the pages after page 1. Go to a clients office and it freezes when printing a reconciliation and I then have to close the program and reopen. I also can't select save as pdf. Ran the QB tool and that doesn't work either.  Don't have problems with checks or reports...

@ssawyer1

How big is your file size?

Try opening the sample file. Did you encounter the same problem?

October 17, 2023
Hello Fiat Lux

105K kb

So opened the sample company and did the bank reconciliation. It printed page 1 only and froze... This is what my computer does at home but doesn't freeze (Microsoft version 10). Now here at my clients it just freezes (using Microsoft 11).

Thanks
