How do I delete a bank account?

I accidentally linked the wrong bank account to QB and now want to delete it.  When I go to the Chart of Accounts and select that account in question, the only options are:

-  View Register

-  Edit

-  Make Inactive

-  Run Report

I've seen instructions online that point to the ability to delete the account here, but I don't seem to have that capability.  I'd make inactive ,but I don't want any of the downloaded transactions (which I added before realizing it was the wrong account) to appear in any of my reporting.

There has to be a way.......

You can click on Make Inactive to remove the account, @crhite.

Making it inactive will delete the account. You can go back to the Chart of Accounts to make it inactive.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon () and choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. Look for the account that you'd like to delete.
  3. Click the Action (▼ )drop-down and select Make inactive.

Also, please take note on the following when you delete a bank account:

  • The bank will be made inactive in QBO.
  • We'll create an adjusting transaction if the account has a non-zero balance
  • Although you can make a deleted account active again, you may need to make corrections to journal entries and balances.

How do I delete a bank account?

Thanks MaryJoyD,

As the account has a balance from the downloaded transactions, inactivating it creates an offsetting entry. Where do that entry go and do I need to categorize it so it doesn't effect my overall reporting?

How do I delete a bank account?

Hi MaryJoyD,

I just inactivated the account in question and reran a balance sheet report and the balance in the account still appears "as deleted" but in the totals? do I need to go in and manually delete all the transactions so it doesn't effect the balances?

Thanks for the response, @crhite.

If you're wanting to remove all of the transactions that are in your Inactive account in QuickBooks Online, then you'll need to make it Active again so you can delete the transactions. No worries, I'm here to show you how to go through this process. I've provided the steps below on how to make the account Active again:

  1. Go to the Gear icon () and choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. Look for the account that you need to make Active again.
  3. Click on Make active.

Once the account is Active, then we can edit the transactions located inside of the register. All you have to do is click on View Register then press on the transaction to view more details and hit Delete. This will permanently remove all of these transactions from QuickBooks Online.

How do I delete a bank account?

There is no 'Chart of Accounts' option when accessing the settings via the gear icon. This is via the mobile app. Will try desktop when I get the chance but I don't have a laptop! Overall, this is super inconvenient. Why is the app unable to reauthorise bank permissions? A message pops up saying it may take up to 4 days. A week later I still cannot access my transactions. This happens everytime (every 90 days) causing business interruptions which are disruptive. If you bank with Barclays, I'd advise avoiding QuickBooks until this is resolved as it's a massive pain!

This isn't the kind of experience we want you to have, ItsMowTime.

I'll share steps to ensure you're able to see the Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks Online mobile app.

For QuickBooks Online app using IOS, the Chart of Accounts can be accessed by clicking the Menu ☰ (hamburger icon). Let me show you how to do it:

  1. Click on the Hamburger icon.
  2. Choose Categories.
  3. Select the bank you want to open.

If you're unable to see the chart of accounts, we can clear the app data. These are temporary files that can cause error if the app save too much of it.

For Android:

  1. Go to the More Options, then select Settings.
  2. Click Refresh Data.
  3. Then choose Yes.

For iOS:

  1. Go to the Menu ☰, then select Help & Feedback.
  2. Click Refresh Data.
  3. Then select Refresh.

If the issue still persists, I’d suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the app to refresh the system. These are the links to reinstall the app:

Here's an article about mobile app features. This will give you all the list of features which QuickBooks Online mobile app supported.

You can always get back to me if you have questions or other concerns about the chart of accounts by leaving a comment below. I'm always here to assist. Have a great rest of the day!

How do I delete a bank account?

Unfortunately your first solution doesn't work.

Your second solution isn't ideal. Last time I had to reauthorise my bank it involved deleting the app, reinstalling and adding the bank back again. It's not exactly a smooth process. Looks like I'll be (reluctantly) doing that again. Is this really the best QuickBooks can come up with?

Thanks for getting back here, ItsMowTime.

I'd like to share another solution that can help you access the Chart of Accounts menu and your bank transactions.

If you haven't tried using the browser on your mobile phone, let's do that by following the steps below.

To open the chart of accounts, here's how:

  1. Open the browser in your mobile device.
  2. Search for https://qbo.intuit.com and sign in to your QuickBooks Online account.
  3. Once logged in, you can select the hamburger icon located in the upper left corner and choose Accounting to access the Chart of Accounts. Or, go to the ellipsis icon located in the upper right-hand corner and select Settings > Chart of Accounts.
  4. Select the account you want to edit or make inactive.

To access your transactions, you can follow these steps:

  1. Go back to the hamburger icon and select Transactions > Banking.
  2. Choose your bank from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click the bank icon and select Update. This is to update your bank with the new transactions.

For instructions on categorizing or matching your transactions, you can check out this article: Categorize and match online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.

If you're still getting a pop-up message and not able to access the data, I'd recommend reaching out to our Customer Care Team. They have more tools to investigate what's causing this behavior and help you further.

Here are the steps:

  1. Click the Help icon located in the upper right-hand corner.
  2. In the Help window, click the Contact Us button located at the bottom.
  3. Enter your question and click Let's talk.
  4. Choose either Start a chat or Call us.

If you have the new QuickBooks Assistant help update, you can follow these steps:

  1. In your QuickBooks Online account, go to the Help > Assistant.
  2. Type Talk to a human and click the Contact a human button.
  3. Select Live Chat / Call me back.
