Hello there, @TV Bent. We know setting up payroll is essential when running a business. Let us help you resolve the error your clients are experiencing.

QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) provides a detailed report that can help you find the specific error message and determine the root cause of the issue. By analyzing the error report, you can know the root of the problem and identify the necessary steps to resolve it. I'll show you how:

  1. In the error message, click the View Report link.
  2. Double-click the file ReportHeader.xml
  3. On your keyboard, press CTRL F to open the search box, then enter Exception String 0 in the search field.

After that, the system will navigate you to the report's error message section. You can locate the specific error message by looking for the Exception String 0 section.

Once done, for a detailed process of fixing the error you received, scan the article to guide you further.

Moreover, I'll leave this link as your reference in handling the scheduled payroll inside QBDT: Set up and manage payroll schedules

You can reach us anytime if you have any other payroll concerns. We'll be here to assist you. Have a good day!

I tried this fix, but none of the error messages matched what mine says.

Thanks for joining in this discussion, @Clansang.

It's our priority to help you set up payroll in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). However, can you specify what error message you're getting? This way, we can diagnose the problem and provide an accurate resolution. You may also include a screenshot in your response so we can have a visual of the issue.

Please click the Reply button below to add a response, and I'll get back right away to assist you further. Keep safe, and have a great day ahead.

I'm getting the same error.  When I open the ReportHeader.xml file and search for the error code requested it just says:

System.Exception: exception thrown in background task at Intuit.QuickBooks.Payroll.Shared.Util.IndeterminateProgressWorker.DoWorkInternal(String initialProgress) at Intuit.QuickBooks.Payroll.Shared.Util.IndeterminateProgressWorker.DoWorkOut(String initialProgress) at DAM.UPSFactory.RunPayrollInterview()

Doesn't appear to be any known fix.

Thank you for sharing the error code you've encountered, @IMVIZE. I'm here to share possible fixes.

The error code and investigation mentioned in the thread affect Desktop Assisted Payroll and Desktop DIY Payroll users. With this, may I know what version you're using? It can help me narrow down where the issue is coming from and provide more troubleshooting for you.

In the meantime, please make sure that you saved the file locally and are signed in as an administrator while in the single-user mode. Check the employee and payroll item lists for any items with special characters in their names. If there are, remove or merge the duplicates.
