Quickbooks Database Server Manager & Windows Server 2025

I have a client that's running Quickbooks 2021 on an on-premises server; we're migrating them to an Azure server with AVD's to run the client app. Everything seems to work with the exception of the Database Server Manager. It's shows as 'Running' but when I scan the drive with the databases, I get errors 'Folder containing company file is not writable' and 'Network Diagnostics: Failed. Resolve errors and Retry!!'

I've confirmed that domain users, including the user ID that was created, have full rights to the files and folders and the share permissions. Two questions:

Does the Database Server Manager for QB 2021 support Windows Server (standard) 2025?

Does the Database Server Manager for QB 2021 support running on a domain controller?

help?

To be more clear, the 'user that was created' is the QBDataServiceUser31 - this is also the user that runs the database service and the service is 'running'

Hi there! Let's get this sorted out, @ifortress.

Currently, QuickBooks Database Server Manager for 2021 does not support Windows Server 2025. It is compatible with Windows Server 2012, 2016, and 2019. For more information, please refer to this article: System Requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2021.

While the Database Server Manager can be installed on various types of servers, it's essential that it meets the required server system specifications. As long as you have an accessible connection that isn't cloud storage, you can install and use the Database Manager. I also recommend consulting with an IT specialist to ensure proper configuration.

Additionally, we can restart your Database Server Manager on the server computer (the one that hosts your company files) to resolve the errors you encountered. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop on your server computer.
  2. Navigate to File, then Open or Restore Company.
  3. Select Open a company file, find your file, then click Next.
  4. Check the box for Open file in multi-user mode, then Open.
  5. Sign in to your company file.
  6. Go to File, then Close Company/Log off.
  7. Open the Windows Start menu.
  8. Type “Database” into the search bar and open QuickBooks Database Server Manager.

If the issue persists, please follow the additional troubleshooting steps outlined in this article: If you only installed Database Server Manager.

Additionally, here's a helpful article that discusses access limits in single or multi-user mode: Tasks that can be performed in a single or multi-user mode in QuickBooks Desktop.

Feel free to tag me in this thread if you have further questions about the Database Server Manager or system requirements in QuickBooks. I’m always here to assist you!

Hi and thanks for the reply,

I'm able to connect from the AVD and I see the file open in the Database Manger.

I changed the manager to point to just the Quickbooks folder, as opposed to the root of the drive, and now the diagnostics pass. Thank you for your help.
