Importing invoice from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

Are there any experts out there who can import a QB Desktop invoice into QB Online? Happy to pay. I have exported the invoice but it defaults .DES - this is way outside my comfort zone, haven't got a clue what I am doing and also time poor. Client just wants her invoice to look like the desktop version.

Thanks in advance.

Just a suggestion, you may also want to attach invoice screenshot from the QB desktop. Depending on the desktop invoice template, it may not even possible to format the same in QBO. In QBO, the Customs Form Styles are totally different than QBD.

Desktop templates can not be imported to QBO at all.

Desktop is more functional than QBO, the chance that there are custom fields is high in desktop, and those fields do not exist in QBO.

In QBO you have to start from scratch with the (sad) built in templates, or use the advanced template designer in word.  Last I checked you first had to go to the  menu gear>settings>quickbooks labs and turn on custom styles (or whatever it is called)

.des = Designer file, for Intuit Desktop QB. I believe only an Adobe Pro program can work with them (other than QB), which means that tool would be able to save this out for you as another filetype, which certainly would be pdf. Desktop also allows you to Save as PDF, so getting a PDF for it is easy. Then, a tool that converts PDF to .docx would be used, and now you have a Word filetype.

Has anyone actually trying doing it this way?  Downloading as PDF then converting to DOCx?  I hope it works because I have been spending too many hours trying to get my invoice right in QBO.  Not very impressed with QBO right now.

Hey QDT,

I appreciate you reaching out to us here in the Community.

An additional option to add to the others mentioned above, is a new feature in QuickBooks Online called Import Style. This invoice importer allows you to bring in your .docx files from Word. Import Style can be accessed by:

1. Click the Gear icon in the top right corner.

2. Select QuickBooks Labs, in the Your Company column.

3. Scroll down until you see "Import Style," toggle the switch to ON.

4. Click Done.

If you'd like to see additional options for importing invoices, I recommend leaving feedback for our product development team. You can enter your message by clicking the Gear icon and then selecting Feedback. This is a great way to make your voice heard, as your message will go directly to the engineers.

This information will help, but if you have any other questions please let me know. I wish you and your company continued success.

Is there a way to save a desktop version invoice template and import that into QB Online?  I have about a case of preprinted invoice borders, etc based on my old desktop template and I'd rather not have to toss those.  I want to be able to bring that template into QBO.  Can it be done?

I have spent a couple hours recreating that invoice in word, but when I get to the last step to preview it, QBO downloads some kind of file it wants to call "print" and there's no file extension, and then it stops.  It doesn't let me complete the template upload.

.des = QB desktop Designer Files are proprietary to QB Desktop and do not import into QB Online.

It would be nice if the QBO team could make a custom column in the table section of the invoices that could be used instead of the date option. Or for the date column to be editable as to the type of field it is and not be restricted to a date only entry.  I have been trying for hours to figure out how to add a column so I can have my job numbers listed on the invoice. I have tried importing a docx file with no success. The EZ map field codes are limited. We have been using QB Desktop for 12 years and thought this would be a good move. We are reconsidering now.

I appreciate you for your feedback, Betzie C.

Rest assured, I'll be sharing your idea with our developers. They'll review the option to add a custom column on the invoice page and may consider adding it on our future updates.

You can also visit our blog to stay updated on our new feature released.

Thanks for joining us here, @akhtar24.

At the moment, the option to transfer the invoice template from QBDT to QBO is unavailable. As mentioned, the Desktop and Online version have different platforms. Thus, some functions may not be compatible with the Online version.

You'll want to follow the suggested workaround provided by my colleague @Morgan_B to use the Import Style feature. Here's the link for details: Import custom form styles for invoices or estimates.

In case you need help with other QBO task, click this link to go to our general topic and look for responses that fit your concern.

Please know that you're always welcome to message me anytime if you still have questions or concerns. I'll be around for you. Stay safe and have a great weekend ahead.

Hi,  this is sad that a company as large as QB does not have an option for a simple task such as importing your templates from your desktop version to the online version.  There is of course a way to do it, they just choose to not implement it.  Why???  Now I get to spend 10 plus hours rebuilding all of my templates.  Would have been nice to know this prior to the purchase.  I spent an hour on the phone with the sales person who mentioned noting about it.
