Receiving the backup error message below. This just started happening. Can anyone please help?

"QuickBooks was unable to back up your company file.  QuickBooks could not copy the company file."

Thanks! Sorry if I posted this twice, I can't tell if my first post went up.

Thanks for getting back to me. I have done what you suggested and still get the following error.

"Backup Failed. QuickBooks was unable to back up your company file.  QuickBooks could not copy the company file."

I rebooted my machine last week and it started working again, but today I tried that and it is not working. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks!

@t2greene

Try open the sample file or create a dummy one. Are you able to backup the file?

I understand the urgency, @MIR5. I’m here to help you so you can open your existing company.

Once you upgrade to a newer version of QuickBooks Desktop, you’ll also need to upgrade your company files to access them. Before that, follow the steps below to prep your file.

  1. Open your original version of QuickBooks, then open the company file you want to upgrade.
  2. Press F2 to open the Product Information window.
  3. In the File Information section, take note of where you save the file on your computer.
  4. Run the Rebuild Tool for your company file.

Once done, you can now update your company file. I’m glad to show you the steps.

  1. Open your new version of QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Click Open or Restore Company.
  3. Select Open a company file, then Next. If you have a backup company file (QBB) instead of a company file (QBW), select Restore a backup copy and then Local backup.
  4. Browse and select your company.
  5. Sign in as an admin user.
  6. Before you upgrade, QuickBooks automatically creates a backup of your existing company file. You can select Change this default location to save the backup in a specific folder.
  7. Press Update Now, then Done after.
