I would like to use a different location instead of the default file location for attached items. I understand I can upload from any file location, but is there a way to change where QuickBooks stores the file, or is it always company name/attach? Sometimes I need to restore a file & Quickbooks doesn't move the attach file automatically. I'm afraid I will delete an older file, forgetting to move the attachments before deletion......
Hello there, klb70.
It's my pleasure to help you change the file location in QuickBooks Desktop.
First, you'll want to copy our company file's current location. Then, navigation to the new location where you want to save it, right-click on an open area and select Paste. Assuming you copied the file, this should paste a new copy in this location.
Here's how:
Following the steps listed above should allow you to change the location where your Quickbooks company file is saved.
I also recommend securing a back up of your company file for future need. Just go to File and click on Open or Restore Company. From there you'll have an option to restore a backup copy in the next window.
Check out the detailed steps in this article: Restore a Backup of Your Company File.

Hi Charles_M,
Thanks for your reply. I understand how to copy my company file :) I'm looking to find out if I can change where the 'attach' file is. Instead of under the company file, I want to put it someplace else so I don't accidentally delete it.
Hello, @klb70.
The attached documents are created and stored in the same location as the QuickBooks company file. The feature to change the default location of your attached files is currently unavailable in QuickBooks Desktop.
However, you can go to the Doc Center and select Save Copy to Desktop to save a copy of the file on your desktop for safekeeping.
You can follow the steps on how to access the Doc Center:

Typical of Intuit making negative changes. Now I wish I hadn't updated from 2018; there I could chose where I kept my files.
Hello,
I was looking at your answer but it's not giving any help even in QuickBooks 21.0 version. Also I've seen that users are keep asking about some changes that QuickBooks has to be changed in a latest version. But it is not happening. For example this document location change, Price rules. Taxability. These kind of changes should be done in 2019/2020 but its not. I need an answer how can I change the attachment folder from quickbooks actual file location folder to somewhere in my system.
Thanks Harry.
I can share some information about changing document location in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) 2021 version, @Harry25.
The ability to alter or update the location of attachments in QBDT 2021 is still unavailable. The attached documents are still kept in the same location as your company file.
However, you may always go to your Doc Center and manually save a copy. You can use the instructions I provided above. Check out the following article for additional information about the QuickBooks Document Center and how to resolve any issues you may encounter: QuickBooks Document Center: FAQs and common issues.
We don't have an exact time frame on when updates on the document location change, price rules, and taxability will be available. That will be a good addition to the current features that we have, so I'll take note of it.

I also invite you to visit the Firm of the Future site. It contains resources and tips to help easily use QuickBooks.
