I've been working on reconciling checking accounts. When I go to my chart of accounts and select a bank account, the register will not open. If I go to "Use Register" on the banking drop down menu, it still does not open. I've rebooted QB. Didn't help. I rebooted my laptop. Still didn't help.
I'm pretty much lost after that. Can I get some help with this? Much appreciated.

Hi All,
Thanks for all of your feedback and contributing answers. I received an update yesterday, v22.0.6.07, and tried again to open register. No luck. I rebuilt the file a few times. Still no luck.
I then tried to condense date figuring maybe there was too much data clogging up the access. I removed audit trail which reduced file size by 4.4%. That did the trick and now I can open the register. So fortunately I didn't need to go to a back up and lose all the work I had done for the day. Thanks again. -Susan
Hi there, @Susan607.
Let me share some insight to help you open the check register, so you'll be able to categorize your transactions and reconcile accounts in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
To begin, you have to make sure that your QuickBooks Desktop is updated for its latest release, and if the issue persists, I recommend trying to verify and rebuild. To do so, here's how:
How to verify your company file data
Before you rebuild your company file, use the verify tool in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac to scan your company file for errors or data damage.
If you see “Your data has failed, the integrity check” you will need to rebuild your file. If there are no problems with your data, you’re done.
Once you’ve verified your data, you can rebuild your company file to fix any errors or data damage that's found. Here's a step to rebuild your company file data:
To ensure the integrity of your file, verify it for errors and data damage. If issues persist, proceed with rebuilding the file.
Additionally, here's an article you can use to reconcile your accounts, so they match your bank and credit card statements: Reconcile accounts in QuickBooks for Mac
Let me know if you have any other questions regarding your check register in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, Susan607. I'll be here to answer your next posts. Take care.
What year of QuickBooks Mac? 2024, 2023...etc?
Rebuilding may help as mentioned above.
It is unlikely but it might be a computer issue. Try rebooting the computer in "Safe Mode" by holding down the shift key as the Mac reboots. Does the register open in QB when in safe mode?
Any messages in the log? Open the console application (its in /Applications/Utilities) and click on "Log Reports" on the left hand column. Then type "QuickBooks" in the search bar. You should see the QuickBooks.log. Double click on that. Keep it open while you try to open the register in QuickBooks. Look to see if any new messages showed up in the log (there's a "reload" button at the top of the log in case it isn't automatically showing the new messages... the new ones will be at the bottom).
There were no errors detected in verify. I did a rebuild anyway. Check register still won't open.
I rebooted holding shift key. Ventura 13.6.6 OS for Mac on QB 2024 Desktop. I was asked for computer login which I entered and then held shift key while the OS booted up.
Does not say it's in Safe Mode and when I tried to open a check register again it was not successful.
Thank you.
To start with, I recommend restoring your backup copies before the issue happens. This is done to return data that has been lost, stolen, or damaged to its original condition.
Here's how:
You can refer to this article for further details: Restore your backup company file for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
Once completed, make another backup copy of your company file so you may restore immediately the files if they are accidentally overwritten. You'll then need to visit the Register page to verify if you're now able to open it smoothly.
If the issue persists, I suggest contacting our QuickBooks Desktop for Mac Support Team. They're the best support group for such inquiries as they can request of account information and confirm why you can't open your bank register in QBDT.
In case you need various guidelines to fix any reconciliation issues you might encounter, you can read this article: Learn the reconcile workflow in QuickBooks.
Feel free to post here again if you have more questions about reconciling accounts in QuickBooks Mac. I'm always here to help, Susan607. Take care.
Maybe try the log file thing and see if an error message is given. You can go back to a backup perhaps but you then may have to redo work (and who knows if the backup will work?)
Run the Verify/Rebuild Data utility for the second and third time. Did you encounter the same error message?
