Buy nowI have been using QuickBooks Pro Desktop since 2012, and currently I’m using QuickBooks 2024 Pro Desktop for the past 8-12 months with no issues in my setup, until this week. I have always used the program in a Parallels virtual machine environment on Macs, and lately on 3 Macs, all running Windows 11. All of these Macs are laptops, and two of them are Apple Silicon Macs, M1 and M4, and the 3rd one is an Intel Mac from 2019. I had been keeping my company file on Dropbox, being very careful not to open it simultaneously on more than one of the Macs. This system had been working flawlessly for all of these years. I do not have multi-use sharing enabled. I haven’t needed it since I only access the company file from one Mac at a time, mostly now from the M4.
Last week, the main Mac, the M4, would not open my company file. The program would launch, but all I saw was a gray screen and a spinning blue circle, ad nauseam. Most of the time, nothing past this would occur. Occasionally, I’d get a message telling me the server could not be reached. That was curious since I don’t have hosting enabled.
Thinking Dropbox was the issue, suddenly, I moved the company file via a backup restore from within QB to the Documents folder in my User folder of the virtual machine. That seemed to work for a couple of sessions, and then I got the same gray screen issue. I am no longer keeping the file on Dropbox.
Everything is up-to-date across the board for Windows 11, Parallels, and QB. I have run the latest version of QB File Doctor, QB Tool Hub, no help whatsoever, and even gone so far as to uninstall and reinstall QB, and I have done that several times. Each time, I was able to restore my company file from the latest backup, open it, add some transactions, back it up, and exit the application. No problem. Until I tried opening the company file again. Then the same scenario. The company file would not open.
I then tried opening the file on the M1 Mac, after transferring it from within a QB backup and restore to the Documents folder, and I got the same issue. So I went to the Intel Mac, this time I transferred via a portable file copy, and the file opened normally, and still does, at least for the past few days. So far so good.
I tried one more uninstall / reinstall on the M4 Mac, but this time I chose to enable Hosting when starting the installation. Same issue; the company file won’t open.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly welcomed and appreciated.
Hi, Thomas.
I appreciate you for sharing the detailed description of the issue you’ve been encountering with your QuickBooks Desktop company file. I understand how frustrating and disruptive this must be, especially after years of smooth performance in your setup. Let me provide more information about this.

What MacOS do you run? Tahoe?
Sequoia on the M4, Sonoma on the other two.
What error message did you encounter? Error -6123,0 or else?
I got a -6123.0 message maybe once. Other than that, nothing. Just a gray screen and spinning blue circle, as I posted in my original message. The info for the error message was no help whatsoever; a complete waste of time for me.
NONE of this exists in QB2024. When you say QBO, it sounds like you mean QuickBooks Online. I am NOT subscribed to that, so nothing you suggested is relevant to my situation.
I have noticed a case in the community a few days ago. The Parallels technician indicated that it is a known issue that Parallels is working on. The technician had the poster downgrade from Parallels 26 to Parallels 20.4.1. The technician said that 20.4.1 is more stable than 26, and they are working up patches and updates to 26. Because it is a known issue, Parallels is allowing any 26 product key to be used to down grade to 20.4.1 for the time being. Since the downgrade to 20.4.1, all their issues with Quickbooks 2024 Pro Plus have subsided and they operating normally.
Another option, you can consider use the trial version of QB Desktop 2024 Mac for the time being.
That is going back 6 major versions. Are you sure about it being 20.4.1? I looked on Parallels support pages and found nothing related to this. Can you provide a link for the downgrade? It might be worth a try.
Well, that was educational for sure! Thank you for the link!
I can now access my company file and confirm that the steps below worked. Thank you, SIAB, for pointing things in the right direction.
I believe this solution came from a tech @ Parallels:
This issue appears to occur after recent Windows updates when running QuickBooks 2024 on Parallels Desktop 26.1.2.
Please try the steps below to remedy the situation:
- Right-click the QuickBooks icon and select Properties.
- Navigate to the Compatibility tab.
- Click Change emulation settings.
- Under Execution mode, select Very strict execution.
- Restart your virtual machine to apply the changes.
This compatibility mode ensures QuickBooks runs with tighter execution constraints inside the virtual environment, which can prevent UI freezes, gray screens, and unresponsive behavior.

Thank you for sharing... I have been fighting for days trying to get my QB to work. Called QB this morning and was basically told they know about the problem but don't know when they will have an update to fix it. UGH.... Had a Parallels Tech on my Mac Studio and he couldn't figure it out either. Then I found your post so I tried it and it worked!!!
