Error code -6209, 0 unable to open the company file

I tried opening my QB program today and it showed like I was upgrading, asking to open a back up or restore, sample company etc. I clicked on the file I had and then the error code -6209, 0 showed up saying QB encountered a problem when opening the company file. I downloaded QB tool hub and ran QB file doctor and it went through the process and at the end it said it didn't find anything wrong with the file. If I can't open my file submit a support ticket or restore from backup. I have tried restoring from back up but I still get the issue -6209,0. It also said to repair network problems before accessing from other computers on the network. I do not have any other computers that access. It says QBCF monitor service is not running on this computer and may be blocking QB and also says my anti virus is active and may be blocking QB.

Please help not sure what the heck happened

QB Desktop Pro 2019 running Windows 10. Windows 10 put on  in February and has been working just fine until yesterday/today

Thank You

Thanks for sharing the details of your problem in opening your QuickBooks Desktop company file, Tom Donaldson.

The error 6209 indicates that you're unable to open your company file in your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). Let me share some additional troubleshooting steps to get you back in working order. I suggest, running the repair tool to fix this error right away.

Before doing so, I recommend backing up your company file for safety reasons in case we run into problems. Once done, you can proceed with running the repair tool.

Here's how:

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu, then click Control Panel.
  3. Select Programs and Features then Uninstall a Program.
  4. Choose QuickBooks from the list of programs, then click Uninstall/Change.
  5. Select Continue, or Next.
  6. Click Repair, then Next.
  7. Once it's done, select Finish.
  8. Then, Update your QuickBooks to the latest release to have the most recent fixes and security updates.

You can check on how to repair your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows.

Here is also how you can resolve Error-6000 when opening a company file. It provides additional troubleshooting steps if the issue persists.

You might also want to check our Help articles page and read some great articles for future reference. From there, you'll learn some best practices in managing your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

Let me know if there's anything else you need help with. I'm always here ready to back you up. Take care and always stay healthy.

Thank you for replying. In an attempt to try to repair I have Windows 10 so the repair that posted I was unable to do as mine has modify and even if I hit that nothing happens. If I ran the file doctor on the QB tool hub wouldn't that be doing the exact same thing as repairing how you suggested?

@Tom Donaldson

Can you open a new company file or the sample one without any issue?

April 29, 2021

Thank you for replying. It will allow me open a new company when it comes to sample company it opens up into my computer showing different files. When I click on a QB file it opens with nothing in it. So I would have to say no sample company but new company yes.

I want this resolved, Tom.

Some instances of Windows 10 don't have .NET 3.5 framework enabled which, QuickBooks Desktop needs to function well. I would recommend enabling .NET Framework 3.5 to fix help fix this.

Here's how:

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run window.
  2. Type Control Panel, then select OK.
  3. Select Uninstall a Program, then Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Make sure .NET Framework 3.5 is enabled (checked), as well as .Net Framework 4.5 (it should be selected by default).
    > If it is not checked, select it and then click OK.
    > If it's already checked, click Cancel.

Also, let's ensure to prevent QBCF Monitor service from re-starting on the workstation. Here are the steps:

  1. On the keyboard, press Windows+R to open the Run window.
  2. Type in services.msc and select OK.
  3. Scroll down on the list and double select QBCFMonitorService to open the Properties.
  4. Choose Disabled as Startup type.
  5. Select Apply and OK.

I'd appreciate it if you'd update me on how the steps work. I want to make sure everything is up and running.
