Thanks for bringing this up to us, @MAS Payroll.

Even if you're using an advanced operating system like Windows 10 or 11, you could be affected by this error. It can happen whether the performed action is on an internal or external drive. I will help you get past this error by showing ways to fix it.

Let's change the file location on your QuickBooks Desktop account.

Then, we can navigate to the new location where you want to save it, right-click on an open area and select Paste.

Before doing so, I suggest securing a backup. See the detailed steps in this article: Restore a Backup of Your Company File.

Here's how to move location:

  1. From your QuickBooks, go to the File.
  2. Choose Open or Restore Company,
  3. Select Open a company file. Then click Next.
  4. Within this window, navigate to the new location of your copied company file.
  5. Choose a file to highlight it and click Open. Your company file should now appear on the login screen.

Following the steps outlined above should enable you to change the location of your QuickBooks company file.

You may also want to reach out to your window support to obtain other basic troubleshooting steps in resolving this matter.

Meanwhile, I'm adding this Community resource if you have other QuickBooks concerns like setting up payments, managing your income and expenses, running reports, etc. Please refer to this article for more details: Community help articles.

It's my pleasure to help you. I'll look forward to having you here again if you have other questions about managing the program. I'm always here to answer them for you.

My fix:

1. Changed to a different USB port

2. Used a new USB device

Old USB and port were simply not working for QB backups, although they seem fine for other purposes.

Thank you
