In QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, it's recommended that you and your accountant should be on the same version to round-trip the file.

You'll want to start over with exchanging your file to your accountant using the steps provided below.

Step 1: Prepare your QuickBooks file:

1. Open the company file you want to share.
2. Choose File, then Save File for Accountant. QuickBooks will ask you to verify the data in your company file.
3. Click Verify (recommended) or Skip Verify. If the verification isn’t successful, QuickBooks recommends that you rebuild your company file before sending it to your accountant.
4. Once QuickBooks tells you that the verification is successful, name the converted file and navigate to where you want to save it.
5. Click Save. QuickBooks will prompt you to create a password to protect your company file. Enter a password or, if you don’t want to password-protect the file, leave the fields blank. Note: If you do enter a password, be sure to share it with your accountant!
6. Click OK. QuickBooks will create a QuickBooks backup file (.qbb file extension).
7. You can click Show File in Finder to locate the file on your Mac.

When your accountant returns your company file, you’ll need to convert it to a QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019 file (.pb2016 file extension).

Step 2: Open the QuickBooks file from your accountant:

1. In QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, choose File, then Open Company.
2. Navigate to the .qbb file your accountant sent, and click Open.
3. Click OK when asked if you want to restore a QuickBooks file.
4. Enter a name for the restored file, and click Save.

.qbb is a Quickbooks Windows backup file that Quickbooks Mac cannot read. It is also very likely that your account cannot save a file in a 2020 year version that a 2019 year version will be able to read.
