Does the processor requirement refer to base or boost speed, ie will it work on a computer that has a base speed of 2.1 and a boost speed of 3.7?

Processor Requirements

Good Afternoon, @jfisher90025

Congrats on making your first post here in the Community.

The minim requirement is an intel duo or higher. Intel Core 2 is the processor family encompassing a range of Intel's consumer 64-bit x86-64 single-, dual-, and quad-core microprocessors based on the Core micro-architecture. It's not much of the speed, just the type of processor that you're using/have.

If you ave any other questions or concerns, just let me know. Have a great day!

It also works on the AMD processors.  With the event of multiple cores, there is a range of speeds that a PC operates - from the low base clock/speed to the high boost speed which makes use of the number of cores to operate faster.  I had already read the article which lists the processor minimum requirement as being 2.4 Ghz, but it doesn't say if that is the base speed or the boosted speed.

Thank you for replying, unfortunately it doesn't answer my question.

BTW, It also runs on AMD processors.  I read the articles you referred to before posting my question.  It says the processor requirement is 2.4 GHz minimum.  But with the advent of multi-core processors, there is a a range that the PC can operate at from the low base clock/speed to the high boost speed.  The requirement doesn't say if the 2.4 GHz is base speed or boost speed.

I am running Quickbooks Pro Desktop 2020 and looking to purchase a new laptop, but want to know if Quickbooks will run on it.  The one I am looking at has a base speed of 2.1 GHz and a boost speed of 3.7 GHz

Thank you

Thanks for getting back to this thread, @jfisher90025.

Are you using the Intel Turbo Boost Technology to run your processor faster? If so, yes it's possible that QuickBooks Desktop 2020 would run using this booster.

Just make sure that this feature is turned on while using the product. However, you may still encounter issues when working in QB if the system requirement isn't met. Therefore, I'd still recommend using the required 2.4 GHz minimum processor.

The Community always has your back, so please let me know if you have more questions.

We want to run QB Desktop 2020 for a single user only on a laptop. The company setups are not complex and our reporting requirements also simple. We are currently running QBPro 2003 (not a typo - 2003) and the occasional wait for a report or search is NOT a problem.

To use the car analogy, We do not need lots of acceleration and horsepower, just slow and steady.

My question is very specific: can I install and run the new QB on a new Lenovo laptop with an i3 dual-core intel processor running at 1.2 GHz. I realise this is 1/2 the recommended minimum clock speed and if the result will be slower operation this is not a problem. What I need to know is whether the program will install and run?

Thanks for choosing QuickBooks, JJCC.

Yes, you can still install QuickBooks Desktop to computers or laptops with a lower operating system. However, we might encounter issues because of this. The new QuickBooks Desktop 2020 requires a minimum of 2.4 GHz.

Reply again if you have more clarifications. Stay safe!

Some members of out team have been running multiple QB year version (i.e 2017-2020) on a 0.8 Ghz machine without any significant issue but generating reports. It just need longer time to generate the reports.

Your QB version is too old. You may purchase a 3rd party conversion service.

Thanks AlexV.
You seem to say yes and then no in the same answer......
The machine we are hoping to use runs Windows10 Home.
I was not asking about running on a "lower operating system", I was asking about the processor clock speed requirement. I have read the system requirements and they ask for a clock speed of 2.4GHz. I want to know if  QB will install and run correctly at this lower clock speed. Speed of execution is not an issue, but the program has to run correctly; if slowly. "We might encounter issues because of this" doesnt specify whether these issues simply involve slow execution and screen-flicker or fatal malfunction.
Then you say " The new QuickBooks Desktop 2020 requires a minimum of 2.4 GHz." which is unequivocal and seems to directly contradict the first part of the answer.

I see from the answer of Fiat Lux below that they are running recent QB versions at low clock speeds. This is reassuring but but they do not say it is the Desktop version.

I hope you will excuse my repetition but:
Will QB2020 Desktop install and run at this lower clock speed?
Thanks for your patience in resolving this.

Thank You Fiat Lux,

That is very good news.

Is the QB version you are running at slow clock speeds the "Desktop" version?

Fiat Lux,

about the question of migrating data from the 2003 files to 2020 Desktop, here is the process as it was described in a very long "Chat" with QB support:

(extract from the chat)

----------------

You: Will the data migration from 2003 to 2012 and then 2012 to 2020 require that I send the data to you either electronically or physically or is this something we will do by QB helping me over the phone?
QB: Something you will do on your end with our assistance over the phone if you wanted to .
You: How do I get and install a QB2012 to act as the intermediate version in the translation?

QB: We can show you that after we purchase 2020 version.
You: OK so I have to get the new laptop, get the backup file onto it, contact you to purchase and create a licence for Desktop QB2020, Download it, Install it, contact support and get them to assist by providing a download of QB2012, get them to help me import the data to QB2012 then export it to QB2020. Did I get this all correct?
QB: You nailed it ! and by the way after we install 2020 version you can do either chat or call to continue for help because we got you covered by that time.

------------------

It sounds like a bit of work but that is fair given that we are upgrading after 17 years !!!!!

1. You may purchase the QBD 2020 license directly or thru a partner/reseller for a lower price. Make sure to secure a free upgrade option to QBD 2021 if you wish purchasing it within this month.

2. You may install the trial license of QBD 2011 or QBD 2012 as the stepping stone to convert your QBD 2003 file. Then you may convert the file on the trial license of QBD 2015 prior to open on QBD 2020. As long as the Support provide the trial license of them, you are able doing it by yourself. Keep in mind, if you are installing or running any outdated QBD version on any supporting Widows OS (i.e Win 8.1/10), you may find some problems. I would recommend converting your company file(s) prior to purchase a new machine. Once the converted file is able to open on the trial license of QBD 2020, you may purchase it later.

I'm running Quicken on a 1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz) with 3MB shared L3 cache with Windows 10.  I have no idea if I have TurboBoost turned on. I'm not running anything else on that laptop besides Quicken.

Quicken can't handle it any more.    It was doing ok up until about a year ago until the new updated version came out.  I'm assuming Quickbooks would have higher requirements than Quicken.
