Hi All

I have been digging around ref these script error what have started happening to us in the last week. The machine is Windows 10 pro so has both Edge and Internet explorer.

I have reset the internet explorer settings and also removed the tick from IE that says about displaying script errors but still getting the popup attached.

Error code 0

Object doesn't support property or method 'startsWith'

Any advise would be great as driving me crazy.

Thanks

Glenn

Error like this occur when QuickBooks tries to connect to your Internet Explorer, Glen.

QuickBooks Desktop uses Internet Explorer to open and display most of its windows. To make sure it won't happen again, we can try configuring your Internet Explorer (IE). Before that, let's make sure to make IE as the default browser

Then:

  1. Open your Internet Explorer.
  2. From the Command Bar, select Tools.
  3. Select Internet Options, then select the Security tab.
  4. Click Trusted Sites, and click on Sites.
  5. In the Add, this website to the zone field, enter *.intuit.com and click on Add.
  6. In the Trusted sites window, uncheck Require server verification.
  7. Close the Trusted sites window, and uncheck Enable Protected Mode.
  8. Close the browser.

We can configure also your firewall security settings for Desktop. This is to make sure that the internet access will go through without any problems.

If you keep on experiencing the same error, I'd suggest contacting our Customer Support team. They'll be able to investigate why you received this error.

  1. Go to the Help menu and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Click Contact us.
  3. Enter a brief description of your concern.
  4. Choose either Start messaging or Get a callback.

Post your response below if you need anything else.

So are we saying I have to use ie as a default browser? IE is useless so I use Chrome

Thanks

Hello there, glennuk.

QuickBooks uses Internet Explorer (IE) to download updates, as well as to display many of the windows in the program. Thus, you'll need to have IE as the default browser and updated to the latest version (Internet Explorer 11).

I've checked our investigation lists, and I found out that this is an on-going issue in QuickBooks. Our engineers are currently investigating and working on an immediate fix.

In the meantime, I recommend performing the steps provided by my colleague to get rid of the script error. Before that, please start with setting up your default browser.

Here's how:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the Gear icon in the upper right corner (or click Tools).
  3. Click Internet Options.
  4. Click the Programs tab.
  5. Under Default Web Browser click the Make Default button.
  6. Click OK.

Additionally, you can turn off the notification in your browser to resolve this unexpected behavior.

Here's how:

  1. In the Internet Explorer browser, select the Tools menu.
  2. Click Internet Options or press the Alt key.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Uncheck the Display a notification about every script error box.
  5. Then click OK.

Also, to receive resolution updates, please contact our phone support to add you to the list of affected users.

I appreciate your patience as we work through this. Fill me in if you have additional questions. I'd be around to help you out. Have a good day.

It seems odd to me that I have been using Google Chrome as my default browser  for years now (not to mention, Google Chrome is the preferred browser by Intuit for QuickBooks Online). I have never seen this Script error until today when opening a clients file on my desktop (it happens to be QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 2020. Coincidentally, I just received a phone call from a long time client who is getting the identical script error and his just started today. This client is using QB Premier 2017. If that's not enough, I just remoted into a clients computer to resolve an issue with DB File Fragments and low and behold, they are getting the same script error. This client is using QBES 2013. What the heck is going on? Is December 20th national script error day?

December 20, 2019

Good to know it wasn't just me. QuickBooks please fix quickly.

Edited to remove doubling.

Jumping in here. I just performed all steps outlined in this article including the last one. I still continue to receive the error . Thanks in advance.

In QuickBooks on the menu bar click HELP>Internet Connection Setup>Next>Advanced Connection Setting>Security (tab)>Restricted Sites>Sites. In the "Add this website to the zone:" paste or type url address the error message is complaining about, such as uxfabric.intuitcdn.net, as an example. Click Add>Close>OK>Done.

Logoff QuickBooks and then log back in. The script error message will no longer appear.

This can be used for all script error messages when opening QuickBooks. I have encountered several. They all seem to be connected to "User Experience Enhancement" (aka User Tracking) that are not functioning correctly. Blocking them does not affect the software....other than to block some pop-up ads Intuit may try to send.

You can answer YES or NO to get past the script error message if you are not bothered by it and do not want to take the above action. It does not affect QuickBooks one way or the other.

I tried this workaroung but still seeing the "Script Error" message.

Do we have an ETA when this is going to be solved?

Thanks in advanced.

I don't see how setting my default browser to IE11 will fix this. These scripts errors have come and gone for years and you can see it by searching other threads. This happens because QB insists on pulling in script files for advertising even though you've already paid for a desktop copy. That in itself isn't the cause, but I'm sure QB developers know what the cause is. Seems one script error will pop up, they'll fix it, and a new come appears a few days afterwards when they decide to update their script files.

Thanks for joining this conversation, @David4823.

The reason why you need to set Internet Explorer (IE) as the default browser is that QuickBooks uses this to download updates. Additionally, the Script Error prompt happens when the settings of the default browser are incorrect or misconfigured.

If you already performed the troubleshooting steps shared by my colleagues above and the issue persists, I highly suggest contacting our Phone Support team so they can check your account using their screen-sharing (remote access) tool in a secure environment. They are also able to perform other troubleshooting to fix this for you.

Here's how to reach them:

  1. Open QBDT and to go the Help menu at the top to get to the QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Select Contact Us at the bottom to connect with our live support.

Just in case, I'll add this article for future reference: What to do if you can't open QuickBooks Desktop.

Please leave a comment in this thread if you have any other issues or concerns. I'll be here to help. Have a great rest of the day!

Why does Inuit insist on continuing to use an old outdated, unsupported browser like IE?  My banking institution will not even allow me to access their site with IE.  IE is a dead browser.  It has been dead for a long time.  The fact that Intuit continues to use it in QB, demonstrates a tremendous lack of interest in truly updating and modernizing the desktop version of QuickBooks.

Hello, @Victor B.

Depending on the QuickBooks Desktop version you're using, it works with the most latest version of Internet Explorer as well. It is the default browser for QuickBooks Desktop. Also, it runs online and offline processes like payroll, payments, and online banking.

  • QuickBooks Desktop 2017 - Internet Explorer 11
  • QuickBooks Desktop 2016 - Internet Explorer 11, 10, and 9.
  • QuickBooks Desktop 2015 - Internet Explorer 11, 10, and 9.
  • QuickBooks Desktop 2014 - Internet Explorer 10 (R3 and later), 9, 8, and 7.

QuickBooks may work using Chrome, however, you might encounter some issues. I'd suggest sending feedback. Just go to the Help menu, click Send Feedback Online, then choose Product Suggestion. Requests entered there will be considered by the software engineers for inclusion in future updates.

Feel free to reach out if you need something else. Thanks!

Almost a year later from the original post, and I'm suddenly getting script errors as well. I have not had IE as my default browser for years (and why would Intuit be using such an outdated browser?!) , and this is the first time I've had this come up. Interestingly enough, I am also now getting a banner across the top to apply for PPP! Coincidence? I highly doubt it.  Hopefully the ad will go away soon, taking the script error away with it as well. Come on Intuit, with as much money as we all pay you guys, you should be better than this!

I understand this wasn't an easy process for you, @Tidler.

I'm here to provide some info about the script error and how to remove the banner ads.

First, QuickBooks Desktop uses Internet Explorer (IE) to download updates and display most of the windows in the software. Thus, you'll have to use IE as the default browser. If you haven't already, here's how:

  1. Open Internet Explorer, and then click the Gear icon ⚙️.
  2. Choose Internet Options, and then pick the Programs tab.
  3. Under Default Web Browser click the Make Default button.
  4. Click OK to confirm.

Please refer to this article for more info about the steps above: How to set IE as the default browser.

Then, let's ensure to configure IE to prevent the script error. I'll guide you with the steps:

  1. Open your Internet Explorer.
  2. From the Command Bar, choose Tools.
  3. Pick Internet Options, and then select the Security tab.
  4. Click Trusted Sites, and then select Sites.
  5. Choose Add this website to the zone field, enter *.intuit.com and click Add.
  6. In the Trusted sites window, uncheck Require server verification.
  7. Exit out the Trusted sites window, and uncheck Enable Protected Mode.
  8. Close the browser to make sure to apply the changes.

Second, the banner ads are designed to suggest you on how to optimize your QuickBooks experience. Since they're affecting your navigation, you'll want to click the or No, thanks button.

Also, you can turn off these pop-up ads from the Preferences page. Here's how:

  1. Got to the Edit menu, and then select Preferences.
  2. Pick General, and then put a checkmark on the Turn of pop-up messages for products and services box under the My Preferences tab.
  3. Click OK to save the changes.

In case you're unable to use some programs or files or see an error message, you can configure your Windows firewall to fix it. Check out this article for more details: Configure firewall and security settings for QuickBooks Desktop.

I'm around in the Community to help if you have more questions about managing your browser and ads or anything else related to QuickBooks. Take care and stay safe always.

July 7, 2020

As everyone has said above, I'm not making IE my default web browser. Intuit needs to get current and stop using IE! I use desktop every day for multiple clients, and this just started happening in this past week at the same time as the PPP loan ad started popping up. Clicking no thanks, or just closing it does nothing to keep it from popping up again (on EVERY SINGLE CLIENT). Other than being annoying, it's not affecting my ability to use the program. Just something that Intuit needs to fix! I realize that it is the goal to push absolutely everyone to online, because Intuit makes WAY more money on that product than they do desktop, but the only thing this does to us dedicated desktop users, is make us want to use another product altogether!

While I appreciate the responses from the QuickBooks team, the solution for me was as follows:

I followed the directions of the individual at THIS POST which was essentially focused on trying to help you out in eliminating the main cause of script error in your computer.

If I didn't find that post I would have never been able to fix it.
