With the switch from integrated Bill.com bill payments to QB's own payment system, the processing time when paying bills has gotten much longer. What use to take a day or so is taking quite literally a week now.
Why?
I should add, I'm talking about ACH payments, not mailed paper checks.
You should consider to signup for a free Melio account to compare. You can pay by ACH for free and your vendor/contractor will receive the payment in 3 business days. You may consider their Fast ACH option (1% fee) and your vendor/contractor will receive the payment in the same day.

Hello there, bobransom.
The processing time when making bill payments indeed matters to ensure you've paid your bills on time. With this, I'll add information regarding the delivery time for ACH payments in QuickBooks.
When utilizing QuickBooks Bill Pay, the standard delivery time for ACH payments is 3-5 business days. You can also schedule bill payments to be paid in 1 business day if you're eligible for Faster ACH Payments, which is subject to an additional $10 processing fee for each payment. Although, it doesn't include weekends and federal holidays.
On the other hand, please note that delivery time will still vary since it will also be affected by third-party delays or risk reviews.
For more information about this feature, you can refer to this article: Learn about QuickBooks Bill Pay.
However, I will recommend contacting our customer support team if payments take longer than the expected timeframe. They can thoroughly check this matter and provide the most appropriate resolution.
Moreover, you might want to scan this resource to review all amounts paid to a vendor for the year and have a better picture of your business expenses: Run a report with vendor totals.

Yes Bob, the processing time is considerably longer as all mine have taken 7 days to process.; however, that is just one of the flaws in QBO's bill pay system. You can not schedule a payment to be processed same day. Melio had an 11 am CST cut off for same day processing. QBO bill pay bumps it to the next day even when you try to pay at 8 am CST, thereby adding an additional day. This makes it extremely difficult to get timely payments to vendors who offer 10 payment discount terms. I was told by a QBO help representative that the cut off was 11, clearly they have no idea.

You can sign up for a free Melio account to sync with QBO and get the cashback as mentioned by 4Gal.

then you have 2 options for expedited payments
1. Instant transfer (Availability: Mon-Fri, 2 a.m. until 7 p.m. (ET).)
Your vendor receives payment within minutes, fee 1% up to $50
Each payment is subject to eligibility requirements and limitations.
2. Fast ACH bank transfer (If scheduled before 2 p.m. ET)
Get your vendor paid by the end of the day, fee 1% up to $30
Hopefully Quickbooks bill pay will get more timely... but I recommend using Melio until then (or if you have bills that need to be paid faster). The timing on Quickbooks current system is just not acceptable.
Sadly, Melio is now charging for their services and QBO still takes way too long!
At least their service is still better than QB Billpay.
