Glad to have you here, dcdesign111.
I can help you create an annual report for your categories in QuickBooks Online.
If you're referring to the "material purchases" as an expense category in the register, we can customize a Transaction Detail by Account report to show your expense transactions. Let me guide you how to do that:
To access the customized report, follow the steps below:

Otherwise if you're looking for a report to show purchases for a certain item, you can use a Purchases by Product/Service Detail report.

Hi @dcdesign111,
Rishika here from Better Reports!
We recently launched our app Better Reports in QuickBooks, which can help create a report that shows yearly total by account. You can also filter for a specific account (like material purchase). We can also break this down my month to see trends and even see the details for a particular date range.
Also, we have a built-in report, “Profit and Loss -Detail by account” that shows total by class and account.
Better Reports also has several other built-in reports, along with the ability to create your own. You can also schedule these to run at a regular cadence and sent to your email or Google Sheets directly so your workflow is automated.
We offer a 14 day free trial, so you can see it all in action.
Also, as part of our offering, we'll be happy to create these custom reports for you as well.
Once you install Better Reports, please contact us and we'll be happy to set this up for you!

I type "Transaction Detail by Account" into the search and nothing populates. I have categories set up.

Welcome to the Community, @BeddyWap. I'm here to help you run the report you need in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
To start, could you tell me your QBO subscription? The Transaction Detail by Account report is only available if you're using the Essentials, Plus, and Advanced versions. You're unable to run this report in QBO Simple Start. For more details, please read this article: Reports included in your QuickBooks Online subscription.
On the other hand, you can perform some troubleshooting steps to determine if this is a browser-related issue. Let's begin with accessing your QBO account via an incognito browser. This does not store cache files that may cause odd behaviors when running web-based programs. Below are the shortcut keys you can use:
Once signed in, go to the Reports again and search for the Transaction Detail by Account report. See the screenshot below for reference:
If this works, go back to your regular browser and clear the cache to eliminate piled-up data. If the same thing happens, you can use another supported browser or device. Might be that the current one you're using has a temporary issue with QBO.
Modifying your reports to reflect more of your business identity is easy in QBO. For detailed instructions, refer to this link: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online.
I'm just around the corner to help if you have any other concerns about running reports in QBO. Feel free to leave a reply below. Have a good one and keep safe.
