I am trying to sort out the products & services list for my Construction company and the previous bookkeeper gave all the categories numbers rather than names and did not assign numbers to the chart of accounts. I want to fix this, but I am not sure if I should change either. Do I need the numbers in the categories of can I just give them names and assign account numbers to the chart of accounts? Also, on Cost of goods sold there are several subcategories I do not think they are necessary should I remove them?

I don't use Items but suggest go into Items and edit to add item name to item number and add account.
Just one item to test it and then see if it shows up where you want it to and if it looks how you want it to.
This is what I would do or could look at Help. :)
COGS to me is COS (Cost of Sales) which includes:
- Direct Labor
- Direct Materials
- Direct Supplies
- Direct Subcontracts
