How do I edit the Category items?

Hey there, Truruts-.

I can help with those category items. To edit or remove a category follow these steps.

  1. Go to Sales and select Products and Services.
  2. Select the More ▼ drop-down, then Manage categories.
  3. Select Edit from the Action column.
  4. Make the changes you want and select Save. Or select Remove and then OK.

This article also goes into more details on products and services categories. I'm here to help if you have any questions.

Thanks for sharing a screenshot of your QBO, Joie.

The Sales menu is labeled in your account as Invoicing. As you can see, the Products and Services options can be selected form this menu.

Aside from that, you can also go to the Gear icon and select Products and Services. Then, proceed to the following the steps in the original response on how to edit your categories.

Let me also share these articles for more details about managing your products and services in the program:

How do I edit the Category items?

Hello,

The "More" menu under Products and Services doesn't seem to have "Manage Categories" any longer, just "Run Report" (screenshot). Please advise where this might have moved?

(FWIW, I'm the account owner and a full admin on the account)

Hi there, Nefastis.

I have replicated your concern on the Test Drive company, in which I was able to see the Manage categories under the More drop-down menu on the Products and services page. I also checked if there's a reported concern about this but haven't found one.

This may be webpage cache issue since the Manage categories button is missing. To verify this, we can try using your browser's incognito feature. This feature doesn't use the existing cache files, which makes it a good place to test if there's an issue with the browser.

Here's how:

  • Press the Ctrl + Shift + N (Google Chrome) keys on your keyboard.
  • Press the Ctrl Shift P (Firefox or Internet Explorer) keys on your keyboard.
  • Press Control Option P (Safari) keys on your keyboard.

After that, try to check if the manage categories button is there. If it works, go back to your default browser and clear cache. See Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online for more information.

Otherwise, switch to a different browser like Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari. The one you are currently on maybe have a temporary issue with QuickBooks, and using a new browser for the moment will allow you to get back to work.

For more details in handling your Products and services items, see the below articles:

Please let me know how it goes. I'll be looking forward to hearing back from you. Have a great day!

How do I edit the Category items?

Thanks @MirriamM for the expedient reply, but the browser doesn't seem to be the issue.

With Chrome, Chrome incognito, Firefox, and Safari I see the same result (grabs attached). I cleared cache on all three with the same result -- only "Run report" shows in my dropdown.

The dropdown does display correctly on the Test Company link you shared.

How do I edit the Category items?

.

Thank you for the screenshot, Nefastis.

I'd like to share a few more steps in addition to what my colleagues have shared.

You can also go to all your lists to access the product categories section, and you can edit them from there.

  1. Click the Gear icon and choose All Lists.
  2. Choose Product Categories.
  3. You can edit the category names or click ▼ beside Edit to remove a category.

Another way is to click on this link while your QuickBooks is open: https://app.qbo.intuit.com/app/categories

If non of the steps works for you, please contact our QBO Support to check this further.

Let me know if you need anything else. Have a good one!

How do I edit the Category items?

I followed this advice (thank you), and I found I have zero categories. However, my old bookkeeper definitely set up many categories. I just want to edit them to be more precise. Where else can I edit categories if they arent' where you described, but they are in there? Thanks in advance!

I understand your eagerness to modify the categories according to your needs, @francesaj.

Count on me to provide unwavering support and assistance, guiding you toward the optimal support channels to ensure successful editing of your categories according to your specific needs.

Typically, you should be able to see the lists of categories in the Product and Services and under the More dropdown menu. Since it's showing zero categories, I recommend contacting our support team directly. They have the tools to check your account and verify the root cause of your concern.

Here's how:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Select Help (?).
  3. Choose either tab to get started:
  • Assistant: Get quick, personalized answers. Select a suggested option, or type a question or topic you need help with. If you decide you need further help, you can still Talk to a human.
  • Search: Search the QuickBooks Online knowledge base directly, or select Contact Us and choose a way to connect with us:
    • Start a chat with a support expert.
    • Get a callback from the next available expert.

Moreover, you can run sales or inventory reports to help group products and services by category. You can expand or hide each category and quickly find details for specific items.

Keep me posted if you have further concerns with modifying categories in QBO. I'll be around to help you. Stay safe!

How do I edit the Category items?

What if the category can't be found in the product category?

How do I edit the Category items?

Welcome to the thread, Jamile.

I'm here to ensure you can see the category on the Product Categories page.

If the category you're looking for can't be found on the Product Categories page, I recommend clicking the Gear icon at the top of the ACTION column and setting the rows. Some of your categories might be hidden.

If not, I recommend performing some troubleshooting steps to investigate the cause of the issue. You can log in to your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account via incognito mode or a private window. This way, it confirms if the cache is the cause.

Here's how:

  • Press Ctrl Shift (Google Chrome).
  • Ctrl Shift (Firefox).
  • Control Option (Safari).

If you're able to see the category you're looking for, go to your default browser and clear the cache. See Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online for more information.

Otherwise, switch to a different browser like Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari. The one you are currently on may be having a temporary issue with QuickBooks, and using a new browser for the moment will allow you to get back to work.

To get helpful insights on the things you buy and sell, and the status of your inventory, you can check out this article on what reports to run: Use reports to see your sales and inventory status.

If you need further assistance or have any other questions about product categories, please let me know. I'm always here to help!
