Statement Writer Error Installing Office customization Downloading file FsdStatement.vsto did not succeed. Only ISW 2009 files can be imported

We recently did an upgrade from 17.0 to 20.0 and when we use statement writer we are getting some errors (see attached).

Error 1:

Microsoft Office Customization installer

Installing Office customization

There was an error during installation.

Downloading file:///C:/Program Files (x86)/Intuit/Statement Writer 2017/FsdStatement.vsto did not succeed.

It looks like Statement writer is pointing to the 2017 folder and not the 2020 folder.

Error 2:

QuickBooks Statement Writer Warning

An unrecognized file was selected. Only ISW 2009 files can be imported. Please select an ISW 2009 file and try again.

We have tried the following things and still not working:

  • We removed some 17.0 folders in c:\programs and c:\programdata\
  • We tried uninstalled Office 2016 and re-installed (ran CCleaner and rebooted)
  • Ran “vstor” which was in the 2020 statement writer folder to repair the Office Tools
  • Tried Single User Mode and Multi User Mode
  • Tried opening the file up directly from QuickBooks Statement Writer and we got error #2 above.

After working with Live Chat (Beau H) they said those Statement Writer files were generated with 17.0 so 17.0 needs to stay installed but the end users could continue using 20.0 with no issues. We just deleted the 17.0 icon from the desktop and turned automatic updates off on the 17.0 version.

We can't get this to work (no updates involved). In QuickBooks Desktop statement writer, we can create a new Statement Writer .QSW file, save it, and close it, and that works fine, but when we turn around and try to open the same file that we just created it won't open with this error. We are using the default path, not a network path, QuickBooks Desktop Accountant's Edition 2018, and Excel 2016.

Hello there, @wpellis1. Thanks for the details.

I have some steps for you that can help fix performance issues when using QuickBooks Statement Writer (QSW). Here's what you'll need to do:

  1. Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
  2. Download the latest version of QSW.
  3. Change the Windows settings.
  4. Ensure that Excel is compatible.
  5. Change the way you access the .QSM file.
  6. Refresh QSW's access permission.
  7. Run the QuickBooks Statement Writer Diagnosis.
  8. Review the .log file.
  9. Edit the QBDSK.INI file.

For detailed guidance on the process above, check this article: Fix problems with Statement Writer.

As always, reach back out to me if you have further questions about QuickBooks. I’d be happy to answer it for you. Take care.
