Question

Can't turn off customer facing autopay?

I have recurring invoices set to go out to 140 people each month for membership dues. I want them to be able to pay by bank transfer, HOWEVER I don’t want them to be set up on autopay because I don’t want to have to chase down bounced payments. I’d prefer them to authorize payment each month, so if it doesn’t go through they see it right then and there. Also, if they cancel their membership I don’t have to issue refunds.

I don’t need more work to deal with. I already have 140 invoices each month to deal with.

From what I’ve seen, the only way to disable autopay is to disable the payment method entirely. Surely this can’t be the case?

How can I disable autopay on customer facing invoices?

That’s a lot of invoices to manage every month 😅 I’d check whether you can keep the recurring invoices enabled but change the payment options so customers can pay by bank transfer instead. That way, you wouldn’t have to recreate all 140 invoices just to avoid autopay.

In QuickBooks, Autopay is optional, meaning recurring invoices won't auto-charge your customers unless they opt in. If they do, you can stop it by choosing to Pause or Delete the recurring transaction.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙.
  2. Choose All lists, then select Recurring Transactions.
  3. Find the recurring invoice you wish to manage.
  4. In the Action column, click either Pause or Delete from the dropdown.

Customers can also stop Autopay themselves using their confirmation email. Let them follow the steps below:

  1. Click Manage payment in the confirmation email.
  2. Sign in to their Intuit Account.
  3. Select Cancel autopay.
Note: Individual payments can't be canceled.

Also, if a customer's Autopay payment is declined, QuickBooks emails them directly so you don't have to chase it down.
