Question

Custom Templates not retaining my formatting

When I’m in the Layout Designer and set all the columns, I choose the widths of each column I’ve selected for the template. When I click on OK the Preview shows it correctly, BUT when I click Print Preview it defaults back to the default size, same if I actually print a hardcopy. The Preview shows correctly and if I go back into Layout Designer it is also still showing the changes correctly.

What am I doing wrong or missing that the Print Preview or a printed hardcopy doesn’t reflect my changes.

It usually happens for one of two reasons: either the wrong template is active on your screen, or the QuickBooks printing engine is rejecting the custom layout due to a minor spacing glitch. Let's make sure your specific, customized template is actually selected right there on the transaction. Sometimes QuickBooks silently swaps it back to the default template. Here's how:

  1. Select Customers and then Create Invoices.
  2. Click the Template dropdown menu.
  3. Verify the exact name selected. If you see anything other than your custom template, choose your custom template.

If you changed the template and the new template doesn't show when you create another invoice, you may have a damaged template. Please ensure that your columns aren't overlapping and the margins are correct.

If the layout is clean but the print preview still fails, your print preference file is likely damaged. Let's try duplicating your customized template and using the duplicate instead. If the issue persists, please follow the steps provided in this article: Rename the QBprint.qbp file.
