Cannot download older transactions from Santander. The CSV file is also not recognised by QB

Sadly this worked in the past, but it doesn't work now. My system just won't convert the xls to cvs and I have tried 10 times. I have 11 months worth of data in my quickbooks but can't get the last month in. I put it in twice but messed up the debit and credit labels and couldn't just delete the whole month, I had to exlude each item. I did this twice. I set the task just to finish the imports with one month import, and its been 4 hours and I feel exhuasted. I think I might have to go back to spreadsheets. This is not making my life easier. I am quite desparate. Any other ideas? I would be do grateful.

Thank you for joining the conversation. I'll share a way so you can create a CSV file.

If you haven't tried yet, you can create a copy of any of the old CSV file and copy the data from the 11th month file paste on it. Then, use that to upload the transactions to QuickBooks Self-Employed so you can review and categorize them.

If the above instructions do not work, it's better to call our QBSE Support team to check and root cause of the issue. They can use a tool for screen-sharing to gather more details.

I have gone back to this. Its taken me two weeks to get over it! And it looked like I had succeeded as Quickbooks says it has imported the date but it only imports outgoings and not income. This is so stressful.

But I will take a break and try again otherwise I will take you advise and try the link you suggest. 

I thought this system was meant to make my accounts easier but frankly I would have done it by now on my spreadsheet. Its so frustrating.

Did this get resolved? I've just subscribed and didnt' realise I wouldnt' be able to pull up last tax years bank statements. Like Jane I'm wondering if I will have to go back to a spreadsheet :( I was  not looking foward to that

Yes Kyle. I did it. I duscivetsd you have to log out and log in again for each csv file. I stripped out all extraneous infurnayiin and labelled the y in and money out volume debit and credit (the opposite for credit cards) and any empty columns. I found the bank version if a csv file didn’t work. I pulled of xls files first. Saved them and then exported them to create csv files. 

Then I imported them one at a time. 

I suggest importing your file. Then checking going through them to mark them up. Have cup of tea and log out then back in for the next one. People here were really helpful but I had to really work at it. It may be our bank or our suggested but I think the instructions on importing historical spreadsheets could be clearer. A non book keeper’s guide.

My bank is Santander so I do t know why their csv file didn’t work and it would be helpful to know why you have to log out and in again for each import. That might be something Intuit can fix or it might be a security thing. I spent hours working this out so let me know if that works.

I understand that uploading files through a spreadsheet can be tedious and time-consuming. However, if you're new to QuickBooks and need access to transactions from the last tax year's bank statement, you may need to manually upload the transaction data into QuickBooks. This involves entering each transaction into QuickBooks one by one, including the date, amount, description, and account information. It's a critical process that ensures accurate accounting records and can help avoid errors or discrepancies. 
 

To import transactions into QuickBooks Self-Employed, you'll first need to export them from your bank. This typically involves logging into your bank account, selecting the period you want to export transactions, and downloading the file in the required format. 
 

Once you have the exported file, you can manually import it into the QuickBooks Self-Employed platform. To do this, log into your QuickBooks Self-Employed account and navigate to the Gear icon. Click the Import Transactions button and select the file you downloaded from your bank.   

QuickBooks Self-Employed will then analyze the file and match the transactions to the appropriate categories in your account. You may need to review and edit the transactions to ensure they are accurately categorized. For more details, please see this article: Categorise Transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Another option, use csv2qbo converter tool. It's $60 one time license.

These are good instructions but I suspect the issue is the same one I had. QuickBooks would not accept the csv file and the process as laid out them won’t work. 

Your excellent instructions don’t say you have to log out and back in to upload each csv file. I worked 4 hours on one day trying to upload a few csv files before I gave up, logged back in, and hey presto it did it. But I had to log out and back on every time which doesn’t seem quite right but may be a security issue. 

Also the csv file created by my bank Santander didn’t work. I had to create csv files on the computer. 

It took an age to solve these issues and I nearly gave up! The actual importing bit is easy. The transactions button, then import, search for your file on your computer, and there it is. But I had to do a lot of pre-prep to get there. 

Importing credit card statements was tricky until I realised I had to mark ‘money in’ as credit and ‘money out’ as debit. The opposite of the bank statements. That would have been useful to have clarified rather than having to work it out (as a non book keeper). Obvious now I know but I ended up having to exclude a lot of transactions and made a right middle. So I hope Kyle can avoid my mistakes!  

But going forward QuickBooks does all the work and uploads my statements automatically and follows the rules I created which is a wonder to behold. I know next year’s accounts will be so much easier. 

But this year’s were harder than usual.
