Adding Personal Transactions

Hi, I am trying to manually add a personal Transaction (since QB cant go back that far on my bank account, and also the Import option for my older Co-op statements is not working - it throws an error).

However, the Business/Personal category can't be changed and is stuck on Business.
How can I fix this?

Thanks for any help.

I'll ensure you'll be able to add a personal transaction in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

When adding a transaction, the software uses the Business type by default. However, you'll be able to separate personal and business transactions. I'll show you how.

  1. Go to the Transactions menu.
  2. Select those transactions you want to change to Personal.
  3. Click the Human icon to mark it as personal.
  4. Once done, hit Apply button.

In addition, you can create a bank rule to speed up your review if you have the same type of transactions. Check out this article for more details: Create rules in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Dear Giovanni,

I am using the UK version and my screen does not look the same as yours. There is no dark bar with icons (human or otherwise) when I am trying to add manual transactions.

Please help.

Welcome to the Community, @Daryl42. I'm here to help you add a personal transaction in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE).

Thanks for providing details about your concern. The previous response outlined by my colleague, Giovann_G is for editing a transaction tagged under Business type. That said, you only be able to see the dark bar with icons once you edit a previously entered transaction in your account.

Since in QBSE, the manually added transactions are automatically tagged as Business, we'll have to follow the steps provided above to edit it and change it to Personal. Let me guide you on how:

  1. Let's create first create a manual transaction by selecting the Transactions menu in your QBSE account.
  2. Next, click the Add transaction button.
  3. From there, enter the needed details and choose the correct category.
  4. You'll notice that this is already tagged as Business under the Type column.
  5. The option to edit is unavailable so we'll need to save the entry first.
  6. Once done, check the box for that transaction so you'll be able to see the dark bar with icons.
  7. From there, select the Person icon to mark it as Personal.
  8. Then, click Apply.

For more information about the process, feel free to check this article: Manually add transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Additionally, importing transactions in your account to lessen your workload in manually entering them, you can simply follow the steps in this article: Manually import transactions into QuickBooks Self-Employed.

I'm always here ready to lend a hand if you have any other concerns about adding transactions in QBSE. Have a nice day and stay safe.
