How do I import a (.des) custom template file from desktop version to online?

When I export the custom template from desktop it only will save as a (.des) file, no option to save as (.docx) file. When I try to import into the online version, it will only import (.docx). So i'm stuck.

How do I import a (.des) custom template file from desktop version to online?

Thanks for joining the Community space, Meagan _RR.

I can share some information in importing a custom template.

The option to transfer the custom template from QuickBooks Desktop(QBDT) to QuickBooks Online(QBO) is currently unavailable. Since QBDT is a different platform, some functions are not compatible with the Online version.

As a workaround, you'll have to start from scratch and create your template or use the custom style available in QBO.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Settings ⚙.
  2. Select Custom form styles.
  3. Click the New style dropdown, then choose your desire transaction.
  4. Enter the name of your template and select any of the available templates.
  5. Once your done customizing your template, hit Done.

Check the guide here for your reference: Customize invoices, estimates, and sales receipts.

In addition, you can also look for any third party app that can convert the file to .docs. This way, you won't need to create custom template and this may save your time as well.

Feel free to visit our help page. Here you can find a helpful response that fits your concern in completing other QBO tasks.

Reply to this post if you have further questions about importing custom style. I'll be around to back you up. Have a good day!

How do I import a (.des) custom template file from desktop version to online?

I appreciate you for joining this thread, @due date wrong. I can share some insight about converting files in QuickBooks.

Currently, the option to convert a template from QuickBooks Desktop (.des) to MS Word (.docx) is unavailable. Both have different platforms, and their templates don't have the same formats.

In the meantime, you have the option to search for a file converter outside of QuickBooks. This way, you'll be able to convert and use your template from your QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

For your reference, here's an article you can read to learn more about exporting your template: Use and customize form templates in QuickBooks Desktop.

Also, you can check out this article to learn more about the file types and extensions used by QuickBooks Desktop by visiting this resource: File types and extensions used by QuickBooks Desktop.
