Changing Primary Work Location

Our company recently moved to a new office location, and we’re trying to update our primary work location in QuickBooks. However, we keep getting the following error message:

“Paychecks have already been created for employees at this work location. If the address was incorrect, correct the affected paychecks. If the work location moved, create a new work location and then reassign employees to the new location.”

We continue to see this error even though we’ve already created the new work location and reassigned all employees to it in QuickBooks.

The issue is that there doesn’t appear to be any way to change the primary location. It can’t be edited or deleted, even though no employees are currently assigned to it.

For context, both the old and new locations are in the same state.

Thank you for any insight.

Thanks for posting your question here in the Community, bmeersmeier.

I want to make sure you're able to update your primary work location for QuickBooks Online Payroll.

The default primary work location is your company's legal business address. If your address changes:

  1. Select Settings ⚙, then Payroll settings.
  2. From Work locations, select Edit ✎.
  3. Select Edit on the primary work location.
  4. Update the address.
  5. Select Save.

The following article provides additional info about setting up and managing work locations.

If the change still does not reflect I recommend clearing the browser cache to remove anything that could be preventing the page from load correctly. You can view the steps to get this done here: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues.

Please feel free to drop a comment below if you have any other questions. I'll be here to lend a hand.

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, those are the exact steps we have already tried multiples times and across different browsers.

It won't allow any changes to the primary location. When we update the address and click save, we get the aforementioned error message even though no employees are assigned to that location anymore. We can't even switch the location to inactive as the active button is greyed out.
