Do any of the older versions of Quickbooks desktop work with Windows 11?

Quickbooks Pro compatibility with Windows 11

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community, NickiW.

Let me share some insights about the operating system.

At the moment, no supported version of QuickBooks Desktop (Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Pro, Premier Enterprise, or Accountant) is certified as fully compatible with Windows 11. If you plan to use Windows 11, your company file will likely open and may be used. However, there may be some unexpected issues with your QuickBooks software.

Here are the currently supported operating systems for running QuickBooks Desktop:

  • Windows 10, all editions including 64-bit, natively installed
  • Windows 8.1, all editions including 64-bit, natively installed
  • Windows Server 2019, Standard and Essentials
  • Windows Server 2016, Standard and Essentials
  • Windows Server 2012 R2, Standard and Essentials
  • Windows Server 2012, Standard and Essentials

To learn more about the compatibility, you can read this article: QuickBooks Desktop Microsoft Windows 11 Compatibility.

@gene05

You have a pre-installed Windows 11? No QB Desktop version runs on Win 11 natively at this time. You should be able to clean install Windows 10 with the Windows 11 OEM license key that the PC comes with - so should not have to buy another license or disc as you can make your own Windows 10 Install USB/CD using Windows 10 MCT or other sources. Once QB Desktop supports Win 11, you may upgrade it later. You can still buy the one time license for QBD 2021 from several partners if required.

@Fiat Lux - ASIA I can get QBDT to run on the Windows 11 Pro machine, but two of our Windows 10 Pro machines can't access the Windows 11 machine, although the 3rd one can.  That machine can open the file and write to it, but the other 2 machines get a "you do not have permission to access this networked comptuer" message ("the machine appears to be configured correctly, but the computer is not responding").  All three are set up in exactly the same way, so not sure what the problem is.  I will suggest they downgrade to Windows 10, I guess.  Sad.

Thanks for sharing. That's why I mentioned QBD doesn't run on Win 11 natively. It is very possible that QB Database Server Manager does not support Win 11 at this time.

Are there any updates on Windows 11 compatibility with QBD Pro?

Quickbooks Pro compatibility with Windows 11

Hi there, @Pyramid1.

I appreciate you joining this conversation. Allow me to chime in and share information about QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) system requirements.

The current supported operating systems for running QBDT are still the following:

  • Windows 10, all editions including 64-bit, natively installed
  • Windows 8.1, all editions including 64-bit, natively installed
  • Windows Server 2019, Standard and Essentials
  • Windows Server 2016, Standard and Essentials
  • Windows Server 2012 R2, Standard and Essentials
  • Windows Server 2012, Standard and Essentials

Currently, Windows 11 is not yet certified as fully compatible with any QBDT versions. Though you can still use QBDT on Windows 11, as mentioned by my colleague above, you may encounter some issues. Also, QuickBooks requires you to use Windows natively and not through an emulator or virtual environment.

For more information about the QBDT and Microsoft Windows 11 compatibility, consider checking out this article: QuickBooks Desktop Microsoft Windows 11 Compatibility.

For tips and other resources, I recommend visiting our website for reference: QBDT self-help articles.

I'm only a few clicks away if you have follow-up questions about QBDT compatibility or anything else. I'll be happy to answer them. Stay safe and have a good one.

What is the hold up on the certification?  Windows 11 is standard on laptops now, other companies certify prior to the release of a product, it has been since October, how long does it take you to test?  I am in IT, and this is really getting ridiculous on the time it is taking you to complete this process.   Telling people to downgrade, and not work with the latest technology, says that Quickbooks is WAY behind in its development process.

I can see the urgency to have the QuickBooks Desktop and Microsoft Windows 11 compatibility, @lynnelt24.

Currently, we're unable to provide a specific timeframe when this will be implemented. Rest assured Intuit is working to ensure QuickBooks Desktop 2022 products will work as designed with Windows 11. We intend to complete the compatibility certification process soon. It may take some time because our engineers are making sure there will be no problem in the long run.

Quickbooks Pro compatibility with Windows 11

Hello, nmcphedran.

I'll chime in and give some details about the current compatibility for QuickBooks 2022 on Windows 11.

You can run QuickBooks 2022 under Windows 11. However, there may be some unexpected issues while using the program.

Our engineers are still working to make the 2022 version work with Windows 11 smoothly.

You have the option to downgrade to Windows 10 (or stay with it until a compatibility update is released) and run QuickBooks 2022.

I would also suggest checking this article from time to time for the updates about the compatibility release: QuickBooks Desktop Microsoft Windows 11 Compatibility.

The full requirements for QuickBooks 2022 can also be found here: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2022.

We have other articles to help you with the tasks in QuickBooks Desktop. Are you still on the process of installing the program? Check out this article for a guide: Install QuickBooks Desktop.

If you've already added data in the program and need help with the reports, this article will guide you on what report you can run: Understand reports.

If there's anything else I can do to help you in QuickBooks, please let me know and I'll gladly offer assistance again.

How do I convert my QuickBooks Windows 11 to the cloud? I have been trying to do this for days now, with no luck/help from "customer support" either. I need to add a new bank information for payroll, but because it's on Windows 11 I can't, it's been a nightmare to fix!

This isn't the experience we want you to have, SmallTownTNBiz.

I can share the steps on how you can convert your QuickBooks Desktop data to QuickBooks Online.

Did you have QuickBooks Online (QBO) account already? If so, you'll have to prepare your desktop file before converting it to QBO. You can review the following information before moving the QuickBooks Desktop file:

  1. Make sure QuickBooks is up-to-date.
  2. Check if your company file isn’t too big to export.
  3. Check out the What to expect when you switch from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online article to see what does and doesn't move to QuickBooks Online.

Then, you can follow these steps to move your data:

  1. Sign in as an admin to the company file you need to import.
  2. Go to Company, then select Export Company File to QuickBooks Online.
  3. Select Start your export.
  4. Sign in as an admin to your QuickBooks Online company.
  5. Click Choose online company, and choose the QuickBooks Online company you want to replace with your company file.
  6. Select Continue.
  7. If you track inventory in QuickBooks Desktop:
  8. Enter Agree in the text field, then Replace.
  9. Hit Yes, go ahead and replace the data, then Replace.

For a complete guide, please see this material: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

I've also included this resource so you'll learn how to change or add bank information for your payroll in QuickBooks Desktop: Change your payroll bank account.

Let me know if you need have further questions about converting data. We're always here to help you.

Quickbooks Pro compatibility with Windows 11

Hi there, sand100.

You'll be glad to know that QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) is now compatible with Windows 11.

QuickBooks requires you to use Windows natively and not through an emulator or virtual environment. To find out what your computer needs, check out this article: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2022.

To upgrade to the 2022 version, here are the steps you can follow.

  1. Make sure all users log out of your company file.
  2. Open your new version of QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Tap Open or Restore Company if you don't have a company file open. You can also go to the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.
  4. Select Open a company file, then Next. If you have a backup company file (QBB) instead of a company file (QBW), choose Restore a backup copy and then Local backup.
  5. Browse your computer for your company file. Select it and then hit Open.
  6. Sign in to your company file as an admin user.
  7. Before you upgrade, QuickBooks automatically creates a backup of your existing company file. Then click Change this default location to save the backup in a specific folder.
  8. Press Update Now to start the upgrade.
  9. When QuickBooks finishes, click Done.

You can now open your company file in your new version of QBDT. If you keep your company files on a server, just move them back. Here's an article you can refer to for more details about upgrading your company files after switching to a new version.

I'm also adding this link to learn what features are included on the program and how you can use them to benefit your business.: What’s new in QuickBooks Desktop 2022.

Don't hesitate to leave a comment below if you have additional questions about upgrading your QuickBooks. I'll be around to help you.

Are there known issues with not being able to export reports to Excel when running Windows 11? I never had a problem before, but now I can only export to CSV. I use QuickBooks Pro 2019, 2020, and 2021 plus QuickBooks Pro Plus 2022, and I can no longer export reports to Excel in any of these versions. Other users of the same network whose systems still run Windows 10 don't have any problems exporting reports to Excel.

I can't seem to install updates in QB22 either even though it says there are some, but all the other years of QB update without a problem, and I realize this is a separate issue from exporting to Excel.  I wasn't sure if this might be linked to Windows 11 as well.

Thank you for joining the thread, @dbouf.

Let me share some information about the system requirements when exporting reports to an Excel file and help you from there.

QuickBooks versions work with specific versions of Microsoft Office. Currently, only QuickBooks Desktop 2022 (Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Pro, and Enterprise) R3 or later is certified as fully compatible with Windows 11 64-bit. Thus, your QuickBooks Pro 2019, 2020, and 2021 plus doesn't meet its requirements, and it's one of the reasons you're unable to export reports to Excel. As a workaround, you can run your QuickBooks Pro 2019, 2020, and 2021 plus on a Windows 10 operating system to export reports to an Excel file.

On the other hand, you can run some troubleshooting steps to get your QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2022 updated. This article will provide general troubleshooting information for fixing update errors in QuickBooks Desktop: Fix QuickBooks Desktop Update Errors.

Once you're able to update your QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus 2022, you can proceed with exporting reports to an Excel file. If you still get an issue, feel free to check out this article to learn how to fix it: Fix export to Excel issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

Let me know how it goes, @dbouf. I want to make sure this is taken care of. I'll be standing by for your response.

Thanks for getting back with the Community, dbouf. I appreciate you performing Mark_R's recommended troubleshooting steps.

Since your books still aren't updating as normal, I'd recommend getting in touch with our Customer Care team. They'll be able to pull up the account in a secure environment, conduct further research, and create an investigation ticket if necessary.

They can be reached while using QuickBooks.

Here's how:

  1. In your top menu bar, go to Help, then QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Choose Contact Us.
  3. Enter a brief description of the issue in our Ask a question (or tell us what's wrong) field.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Select We’ll contact you for a callback or Message Us to start an instant messaging session.

Be sure to review their support hours so you'll know when agents are available.

If there's any additional questions, I'm just a post away. Have a great day!
