How do I stop being asked for a text verification code every time I sign in to QuickBooks Online, and what's the difference between two-step verification and multi-factor authentication?

The verification codes you're seeing can come from two different features, and telling them apart is the key to fixing the right one. Two-step verification is an opt-in setting that sends a code to the phone on file every time you sign in on any device; you can turn it off. Multi-factor authentication is a separate, always-on layer that fires when QuickBooks doesn't recognize your device or network; that one can't be turned off, but you can reduce how often it triggers.

How to turn off two-step verification

  1. Sign in to your Intuit Account at accounts.intuit.com.
  2. Select Sign in & security.
  3. Select 2-step verification.
  4. Turn off the Use 2-step verification switch.
  5. Enter your account password, then select Continue.

You'll receive an email confirming the change. With this off, you won't get a code at every sign-in, and the requirement to use the owner's specific phone goes away.

Why codes may still appear after you turn it off

QuickBooks uses a risk-based identity check any time it can't reliably recognize your device, network, or browser. This is separate from 2-step verification and can't be disabled. If you're signing in from a trusted device and still getting prompted every time, the most common cause is an ad blocker or privacy extension preventing QuickBooks from recognizing your browser session.

To fix it, add *.intuit.com to your ad blocker's allow list, or disable the extension for *.intuit.com. Consistently using the same browser and device will also reduce how often QuickBooks asks you to verify.

I'll provide information on why you're suddenly prompted for a code when logging in and guide you through the process of disabling two-step verification, @caseydmosley.

If two-step verification is activated, the number associated with the account will receive a verification code.

The code is likely due to the two-step verification security feature in QuickBooks Online (QBO). This feature enhances your account security by adding an extra layer of protection to confirm your identity and prevent unauthorized access.

If you have access to the phone number associated with the account, you may disable this feature, or you can request assistance from the master admin of the account.

Here's how:

  1. Sign in to your Intuit account.
  2. From the left menu, select Sign in & security.
  3. Select 2-step verification.
  4. Turn off the Use 2-step verification switch.
  5. Enter your account password, then select Continue

I am always available to assist you with any concerns you may have about two-step verification when logging into QBO. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us in the thread whenever you need help.

@Ethel_A  RE: If two-step verification is activated, you will receive a verification code.

That is not correct.

If two-step verification is activated, Intuit will send a verification code to one phone, the owner's phone. The owner may be in outer Mongolia on a trip and so the user will not receive the code. Which is what the user is complaining about.

Are you describing a system that only sends the verification codes to one phone, no matter which user is logging in? If so, isn't that really quite stupid?

The implication is that any time the holder of the one phone Intuit texts is not around, no one can log into QuickBooks. Who would want that? Maybe the phone holder is on a plane, or in a private meeting, or out of range with no service. Maybe their phone is dead with no way to charge it.
