Classes in QB Online Simple Plan

I recently migrated from desktop to Quickbooks Online Simple Start.

I just went to begin entering transactions and do not see a place to select my classes.

Then I looked at some of my older transactions that I migrated into my online version and I do not see my classes.   I own a real estate business and each house I add as a class.  I have a Rental Category and a Sale Category.  Every expense related to a house is assigned the appropriate class.

Can someone advise -

1. Why did the classes not migrate with everything else/how can this be fixed

2. I saw how to turn on classes in an article, however I do not see that option

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Under Your Company, select Account and settings.
  3. Choose the Advanced tab.
  4. Then from the Categories, turn on the Track classes.

Thank you for your assistance.  Jenny

I'll elaborate on some details about classes so you'll be guided on how you can manage your subscription, RealInvestor.

Classes should migrate from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online (QBO). You only have to make sure that you're using the Plus and Advanced QBO versions to access the feature. You can upgrade your subscription if there's a need to use the feature. To do so, follow the detailed steps provided below:

  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online as a primary or company admin.
  2. Select Settings ⚙ and then Account and settings.
  3. Select the Billing & subscription tab.
  4. Make sure your payment info is up to date.
  5. In the QuickBooks Online section, select Upgrade your plan.
  6. Review the available plans and then select Choose plan.
  7. Follow the onscreen steps to upgrade your plan.

Once I upgrade, how can I get the classes for the data I migrated to show up?

Classes in QB Online Simple Plan

Thanks for getting back with the Community, RealInvestor.

To get your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) class list to show up in QuickBooks Online (QBO), you'll need to move your data from QBDT to QBO. You have 60 days from the time you create your QBO account to migrate data into it from QBDT. Initially, you'll want to get your desktop file ready before performing the data migration.

It's recommended that you confirm your company file isn't too be to export and review our list of what does and doesn't move to QBO.

An important step will be making sure QBDT is up-to-date with its latest release.

Here's how:

  1. In the top menu bar, go to Help, then Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Click Update Now, then Get Updates.

You'll also want to confirm your company file's Total Targets is less than 750,000. You can do so by pressing Ctrl + Q on the keyboard while in QBDT. If your file exceeds our target limit of 750k, it can't be converted to QBO. The only option in such a case to transfer data would be to import lists and balances into QBO, or start fresh.

Next, it's best to print a copy of your Sales Tax Liability report. This will be important for entering adjustment entries after the move:

  1. In your top menu bar, go to Reports.
  2. Click Vendors & Payables, then Sales Tax Liability.
  3. From the Dates ▼ drop-down, choose All.
  4. Use your Print ▼ drop-down and pick Save as PDF.
  5. Specify a folder you want to save it to, then give the file a name.
  6. Select Save.

Once you're prepared, you can begin moving your QBDT file to QBO. If your QBDT version is 2018 or older, you'll need to use our online tool.

Please feel welcome to send a reply if there's any additional questions. Have an awesome Tuesday!

I have already migrated to the Online Simple version but was not aware it did not include classes.  Are you stating that to upgrade from Simple plan to Advance, I will have to do the migration from desktop again?

Thanks!

Yes, you're right, @RealInvestor. The Class feature is only available in QuickBooks Online (QBO) Plus and Advanced. We can turn on the feature by going to the Advanced tab, then opening the Categories section.

When you upgrade your plan, it will show you the cost. Check this article to help you change it: Upgrade or downgrade your QuickBooks Online subscription.

Once upgraded, we can purge your account to delete all the data entered into the company (this can't be undone, however). Then, migrate the data again from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QBO.

To purge the data, follow the steps listed below:

  1. Log in to your QuickBooks Online account.
  2. Change the URL to include /purgecompany.
  3. Example: URL shows https://...qbo.intuit.com/app/homepage, change to: https://...qbo.intuit.com/app/purgecompany.
  4. The next screen will provide a summary of the items to be deleted.
  5. Type the word “YES” once the data gets deleted, then click OK.
  6. Click Wipe Data once your selections are complete.
  7. Once the deletion is complete, you will be rerouted to your home page.

To export the data:

  1.  Go to the File menu on the left pane.
  2. Select Utilities, then choose Copy Company File for QuickBooks Online.
  3. Click Start your export. Leave your account open.
  4. Log in to QBO as an admin, then follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Pick the online account in the Choose online company drop-down.
  6. Tap Continue.
  7. Enter Agree in the text field, then hit Replace.
  8. Tap Yes, go ahead and replace the data, then select Replace.

You may visit this page to learn more about the Class tracking feature: Class tracking in QuickBooks Online.

You can also visit the articles below for future guidance on how to fix issues when importing QBDT data to QBO.

I'm right here if you need further help to migrate data in QuickBooks. I'm more than willing to lend you a hand. Have a wonderful day.

Honestly, this is very frustrating.  I went through many days of going through what I was told to do and it did not work.  It did not work because I was told to use one upgrade version and ended up support stated it was the wrong one.  I finally got migrating to the SImple Plan and only when support got online with me and walked me through it.

I was never told that classes were not included.  So here I am.

Now, you are saying I have to go through the entire process again.  That is something I did not want to hear.  Can support call me at [removed] to walk me through this to get it finally done so that I can catch up on all my records for the year?

Thanks

Hi there, @RealInvestor.

I appreciate you for getting back in this thread. As much as I'd like to help you get through this situation, know that you'll need to contact our Customer Care Team to get this sorted out immediately. They have the tools and resources, and at the same time, they can offer a screen-sharing session or assign an agent to assist you in setting up your data and upgrading your account to a QuickBooks Online (QBO) subscription that has the feature you want to access. I'll write down the steps below to get you going.

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Select Help (?).
  3. Select either tab to get started:
  • Assistant: Get quick, personalized answers. Select a suggested option, or type a question or topic you need help with. If you decide you need further help, you can still Talk to a human.
  • Search: Search the QuickBooks Online knowledge base directly, or select Contact Us and choose a way to connect with us:
    • Start a chat with a support expert.
    • Get a callback from the next available expert.

See this page for more information: QuickBooks Online Support.

Apart from that, I've got this handy article to learn more about what data can be imported inside QBO: Common questions about importing data to QuickBooks Online.

Once again, @RealInvestor. Feel free to leave a comment below if you have any additional QuickBooks-related queries or need help accomplishing specific tasks inside the program. I've got your back.

@RealInvestor

As I know, if you use the class feature in your QB Desktop file, the settings will not convert to QB Online Plus or Advanced. You will have to reset the class feature in your QBO account manually or purchase a third party service to convert your data with classes.

So, you believe that even if I remigrate it will not migrate the classes?  I will need to manually add them or purchase a product to do so?  Am I understanding you correctly?  Thanks so much!
