File menu dropdown not working in Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021

File menu dropdown not working in Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021 but the other menu options are working so I can't close the company, open a previous company, backup, etc. When I click on File it turns green but no dropdown options show. Also, out of the blue, Quickbooks is very, very slow.

File menu dropdown not working in Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021

Thanks for posting in the Community space and bringing this to our attention, conroypi.

I'm here to provide some troubleshooting steps so you can close your company file and have the File menu work.

The display or view settings on your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) can cause display issues. To fix this, let's modify QuickBooks DPI settings.

Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) and open the Windows Start menu.
  2. Type "QuickBooks" into the search.
  3. Right-click the QuickBooks icon and tick Open file location.
  4. In the folder, right-click the QuickBooks.exe file and select Properties.
  5. Go to the Compatibility tab and place a checkmark in the Disable display scaling on high DPI settings box.
  6. Hit Apply, then OK.

Once done, re-open QBDT to double-check. If the same thing happens, consider checking out this article and proceed to Step 2: Adjust your view preferences in QuickBooks section for more troubleshooting steps: Fix screen issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

As for your other concern, you can check this article for tips on how to optimize the performance of the desktop program: Manage your data files to fix QuickBooks Desktop performance issues

Please keep in touch if there's anything else I can do to help you succeed with QuickBooks. I've got your back. Have a great day.

File menu dropdown not working in Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021

Thank you MirriamM. I did that and updated. Not sure if it was one or the other or both but I can access the File dropdown menu now.

The second problem is the software has slowed down to where each time I click on a menu it takes up to a minute for the dropdown to show up and recording any kind of transaction takes several minutes.  The data file is not large (30,464 kb). The program is now current on updates. I am on Windows 11 and I just re-downloaded the program a few months ago. This delay just started a couple days ago. My IT tech says it doesn't make sense because it is barely using the CPU (0.1%). The data files are on our server, but we have been working this way (using QB on desktop with QB data on server) for over 20 years and it's never been a problem before.

Thanks for the prompt reply, @conroypi. It's good to hear that you can now access the File dropdown menu. Let me add some insights to help you fix the slow performance of QBDT.

After updating QBDT and Database Server Manager on your host or server, set up company and personal preferences. In this way, we can turn off auto pop-ups in QuickBooks that cause slow responses.

Please note that if you're in Multi-user mode, be sure to switch to Single-user mode. Then, select Yes to save the changes before you move to the next preference. For detailed info, check out this article: Set Company and Personal Preferences.
