Move Quickbooks Desktop 2006 data to current Quickbooks Desktop version?

Yes, converting your QuickBooks Desktop 2006 data to the latest version is possible, ChipConnJohn. I've got insights to share to help you update and restore your company file to keep you going.

Since this desktop version is outdated and QuickBooks has a three-year lifecycle, this will require incremental updates to prevent data damage on your company file. You may have to install trial links from 2006, 2009, 2012, 2015, 2018, and 2021 to upgrade your data gradually. Then, if you've reached these updates, you may have to install the 2023 latest version and restore your file from there. You'll first need to ensure a backup copy of your company data before converting.

Then, whenever you're ready to move your QBDT 2006 data to open it in the newest version, you may follow these steps once you've already prepared your file.

  1. Open your new version of QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Go to File, then select Open or Restore Company if you don't have your company file open.
  3. Select Open a company file, then Next. If you have a backup company file (QBB) instead of a company file (QBW), select Restore a backup copy.
  4. Find your company file. Select it and then click Open. Note: If you can't find your company file, open the Windows Start menu and then File Explorer. Search for your company file by name or the .qbw file extension. If you still can't find it, make sure it's not hidden.
  5. Sign in to your company file as the admin user.
  6. Before you upgrade, QuickBooks automatically creates a backup of your existing company file. You can select Change this default location to save the backup in a specific folder.
  7. Select Update Now to start the upgrade.
  8. When QuickBooks finishes, select Done.

You can refer to this article for more detailed information: Move your company files after you switch to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

Additionally, I'd recommend contacting our Customer Care Team to provide you with real-time assistance in performing these steps. They can also help you with the trial links to ensure data are accurately converted. That said, here's how to reach them:

  1. In your QuickBooks Desktop account, click the Help icon and select Contact Us.
  2. Enter a brief description of your issue and select Continue.
  3. Select Chat with us or Have us call you.

Moreover, you can check out the available trial links for the current version: Download a trial of QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.

We're always available in this forum if you have additional questions about converting QuickBooks data. Feel free to leave them in the comments below. Keep safe and have a good one!
