Multiuser mode and host computer

I want to setup a host computer for multiuser mode to house the company file.

My question is can the host computer be on a different network than the workstation computers?  For example, can the host computer be located at the office on the company network but I am at my house working on the company file?

If you need to open the same company files in multiuser mode simultaneously, you can set up a simple private cloud on your host. Your remote users will access QB via internet connections.

To further assist you on how to set this up, I've listed the process you can follow. To start, you'll need to set up your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) first. If you haven't yet, refer to Step 1 of this article: Install QuickBooks Desktop on a server. 

 

Next, ensure that QuickBooks Database Server Manager is installed on the computer that hosts your company files (server computer). Then, use it to scan the folder that holds your files.

 

When verified, set up folder permissions on your server computer to ensure that this has permission to be on your network. 

 

After that, adjust your Firewall and Internet security settings so QBDT and Database Server Manager can run on your network.

 

Then, set up the admin rights to make sure you can sign in to your server computer using your account.

 

Once you're done setting up everything outside of QBDT, you're next step is to turn on Multi-user Access on your server computer:

 

  1. In your QuickBooks Desktop, go to the File menu.
  2. Next, hover over Utilities and select Host Multi-User Access.
  3. Then, click Yes to confirm.

 

Finally, you can now install your workstations. For reference, refer to Step 8 of this article: Install QuickBooks Desktop on a server.
