Convert projects to Sub-customer

I just recently migrated from QBD 2020 to QBO.  All of my tenants (strip center) are showing up as Projects instead of Sub-customers.  How can I make each tenant a Sub-customer of the Customer (building) and have all the transactions also come over?

Convert projects to Sub-customer

Welcome to the Community, dafish84.

To verify my understanding, are you saying your sub-customers changed into projects during the data migration and you'd like to change them back?

If so, you can convert or merge a sub-customer with an existing project.

Here's how:

  1. In your left navigation bar, go to Projects.
  2. Find a project you're working with.
  3. Copy the name of your project.
  4. Access the Sales menu and open your Customers tab.
  5. Locate and open the sub-customer.
  6. Click Edit.
  7. From your Edit window, change the Display name to match your project's name.
  8. When you're ready, select Save, then Yes to confirm the merge.

I've also included a few detailed resources about  using QuickBooks which may come in handy moving forward:

Please don't hesitate to send a reply if there's any additional questions or information you'd like to provide. Have a wonderful Monday!

Convert projects to Sub-customer

I am not sure if they were sub-customers or projects in QBD, but in QBO, I have one customer (Madison Square, the name of my strip center) and all of the tenants are showing as projects and I would prefer for each tenant to be a sub-customer or Madison Square (customer).  I tried to create a new sub-customer by coping the name of the project like you mentioned and I get the following error, "Something's not quite right: A project is already using this name. Please use a different name"

Convert projects to Sub-customer

Thank you for always getting back to us, @dafish84.

I understand that changing your tenants from projects to sub-customers is crucial for you. Although there isn't a direct way to convert projects into sub-customers, I have a solution that might help. You can modify the name of your project or add a marker to show it's inactive. After that, you can create a new sub-customer using the original project's name.

Here are the steps to rename a project:

  1. Go to Projects.
  2. Select the project you wish to change.
  3. Add a name in the Project Name option.

Once done, you can now add a new sub-customer.

Furthermore, it's not possible to use the same name for both your project and sub-customer, which explains the error you encountered. Also, there isn't an option to merge an existing project into a sub-customer.

In addition, you can visit these links for your future reference about projects and customers:

Moreover, did you know that we offer a bookkeeping service? It is called QuickBooks Live Assisted Bookkeeping service where you may obtain one-on-one assistance and answers to queries regarding on how to enter transactions, categorization and reconciliation.

Convert projects to Sub-customer

Hello,

The original question was to make a project into a Sub- Account and the second answer states "Also, there isn't an option to merge an existing project into a sub-customer." Is there still not a way as of today?

Will there be a time that it will be?

We work with a third party company that syncs with qbo and having them as projects when they should be a subaccount it doesnt sync propertly, we have to merge accounts constantly because of this.
