The chart of accounts will not display the drop down list to select a parent account when making a sub account.

The parent account drop-down list will not display if the intended parent account does not share the exact same Account Type and Detail Type as the sub-account being created. Also, QuickBooks Online hides the parent option if the parent account is an active Credit Card account connected to online banking.

To resolve this, first ensure that both accounts are set to the matching Account Type and Detail Type. Then, click directly into the Parent Account field and manually type the exact name of the parent account instead of relying on the drop-down menu. This will bypass the restriction and successfully link the sub-account to the parent.
