Question

User name "Admin" is not a recognized name

I am running a standalone 2014 version of Quick Books Pro.  I have 3 “companies” although they are for my personal accounting.  Two of them open fine, but one gives me the “User Name “Admin” is not a recognized user” message.  The three data files have been working fine for months/years and now today I get this error on the one.  I have checked permissions, and various other things.  Even tried the password reset tool, but got:

Starting Password Reset...
Validating Token...
Token validation passed
Loading DataBaseManager.dll...
Retrieving file information
Error retrieving file information...
Unable to reset password for this file

How can I get this resolved?  HELP!  Thanks

To resolve this issue, the best next step is to run the QuickBooks File Doctor tool to repair file-level corruption that is preventing your Admin login.

Since the password reset tool failed with the message "Error retrieving file information," this indicates that the problem is not a forgotten password but rather data corruption within that specific company file. Please note that because you're using a standalone version of QuickBooks 2014, modern repair tools may not always work well with older file formats. However, the QuickBooks File Doctor remains your best initial option.

Please follow these steps in the exact order provided:

  1. Download and install the latest version of the QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  2. Open it, then select the Company File Issues tab.
  3. Click Run QuickBooks File Doctor.
  4. Use the drop-down menu to find your affected company file, or click Browse to locate the .QBW file.
  5. Select Check your file and enter your Admin password when prompted.
  6. Let it complete, as this may take a few minutes.

For a detailed breakdown of the underlying login error, you can reference this article: Error: The attempt to log in with the user name Admin failed.

Let me know how the File Doctor works for you.
