Question

specific file not found

I purchased a new computer and when I downloaded Quick Books, restored my company file from a backup. Now, when I go to my invoices and click on the attachment that was there, I get a message that says specific file not found. How do I find that file on my old computer and bring it to my new one? I do not have an online account.

Good afternoon Granny,

Nice seeing you in the QuickBooks Community! I will be happy to show you how to find the files on your old computer and bring to the new one.

When you restore a QuickBooks backup (.qbb file), the program only restores the financial data, leaving behind the linked document folder. To resolve this, you need to manually locate the Attach folder on your old computer and copy it to the exact same directory as your company file on your new computer.

  1. On your old PC, open QuickBooks and press F2 on your keyboard to open the Product Information window.
  2. Under the File Information section, note the exact drive path where your company file is saved.
  3. Open File Explorer and navigate to that folder. Look for a folder named Attach or [Your Company Name]_Att.
  4. Copy this folder and paste it to a USB flash drive or send it over your network.
  5. Find the location of your restored company file on your new computer (usually in C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files).
  6. Paste the Attach folder directly into this directory so that it sits right next to your .qbw company file.
  7. Open your company file on your new computer.
  8. Go to the Company menu (or Lists) and select Documents, then Repair Attached Documents Links.
  9. Click Repair Links and let the scan finish.

Please note if your invoice files have been renamed or relocated, you may need to manually update the folder structure within the Attach folder (e.g., matching the new company file's exact name).

If you need additional assistance, we are here to help further. Looking forward to an update! See you soon.

I did everything and it still says the same thing when I click on the attachment in the invoice.
