Question

Waiting for Printer Connection

I have QB Desktop 2024 Premier Plus Edition Subscription. My subscription renews February 2027. I have run the QuickBooks Tool Hub - Company File Issues, Network Issues, and Program Problems. I can print reports, Invoices, Estimates, etc, but I cannot print a check. When I click on File, scroll to Printer Setup, and click on Check/PayCheck form name - I either get the “Waiting for Printer Connection text box, or I get the QuickBooks - Unrecoverable Error Dialog box. This is annoying as I have a few checks to print. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my printer. I have checked for updates, etc. I have seen that this is an issue, and although I have seen this before a few weeks ago, after a day it was resolved. Can someone please advise as to what is going on? I can see that I am not the only one this has happened to; so, if someone can help, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Open the sample file. Are you encountering the same problem?

Yes. This morning, I opened my QBD, went directly to Print Checks, and the same box appeared, and no checks printed.

I understand how frustrating it is to deal with this issue when you just wanted to print your checks. Since you've already completed those initial steps, the issue is likely caused by a corrupted hidden print settings file in QuickBooks that prevents check printing across all files.

You can troubleshoot this by manually renaming your print configuration file by following these steps:

  1. Find the QBprint.qbp file by going to your QuickBooks folder (usually under C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 20xx). Make sure your computer is set to show hidden files if you can't see the ProgramData folder.
  2. Right-click the QBprint.qbp file, select Rename, and add .old to the end (making it QBprint.qbp.old).
  3. Return to QuickBooks Desktop.
  4. From the File menu, select Printer Setup, choose any form name, and click OK to generate a fresh file.
  5. Test printing a transaction again.

For further fixes, check out Solutions 2 and beyond in the guide: Fix PDF and print problems with QuickBooks Desktop.

If the problem persists, it typically indicates a damaged program component. I suggest uninstalling and reinstalling QuickBooks Desktop.
