Adding Merchant Category Codes

I have clients that are being declined for charges - adversely affecting my income - because there is no merchant category code.  How do I add these?

MCC Codes (or merchant category codes) are assigned to merchant accounts during the set up process and are used to differentiate between types of business & industries.  MCC codes can also effect the merchants processing rates. An improper classification could cause a merchant to pay higher than necessary processing fees.

Curious. Has this been resolved since February?  I am having the same issue with clients being unable to use their credit cards to pay for services, and I am pretty certain it is related to MCC.

Hi there, @MeaghanM.

Thank you for sharing this with the Community. You can assign the Merchant Category Code (MCC) through the Merchant Service Center. You can change the code by going through these steps:

  1. Go to this link merchantcenter.intuit.com.
  2. Sign in your Merchant account.
  3. Go to the account tab.
  4. In the account profile, it will give you a section there for your MCC.
  5. You can change it there to the best description that fits your business.

If you can’t assign it, I suggest reaching the QuickBooks Merchant Services support. They can check your merchant account and assist you in assigning the code.

Feel free to visit this page about locating the deposits or fees in your merchant account for a reference.

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to reach us. Have a good day.
