Question

chart of account

I picked up this client who had subscribed to QBO and set up the categories and chart of accounts. I added multiple new accounts and subaccounts to the chart of accounts. When I'm trying to categorize my bank transactions, my categories do not match my chart of accounts. How do I correct my categories?

Hi, @Matt1811

I've got the steps you need to correct your categories in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

To correct your categories, we have to undo them. This way, we can work with a clean slate.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Banking menu.
  2. On the Categorized tab, select the unmatched transaction.
  3. Click Undo

Once done, the transaction will return to the For review tab. There, we can start categorizing the transactions. In categorizing, we have to ensure that we select the appropriate accounts. To do that, we have to review them one by one:

  • If the category field is blank:
    • Choose a category from the dropdown.
    • Add a new category to the dropdown.
  • If the category field has a category suggested by QBO:
    • Confirm that category
    • Change that category by choosing another one from the dropdown or adding a new one.

You can check this article to learn more about categorizing bank transactions in QBO: Categorize online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online

Additionally, you can read this article for more details about categorizing your transactions automatically: Set up bank rules to categorize online banking transactions in QuickBooks Online.
