Question

chart of accounts sublevels

In an effort to reorganize my Chart of Accounts, where I have a number of Subaccounts, I added ID numbers. Don't ask me why, but I thought it would allow me the flexibility to rearrange things.

Before adding the numbers, all the Subaccounts were nicely indented under their proper Main account. After adding numbers, all accounts are piled on top of each other, no indent. Although the Subaccounts are under their Main account, visually it is difficult to separate them.

I figured that by removing the ID numbers it would revert back but it has not. I've shut the program down a number of times and it still shows up as described above.

When I create a Report, which I'm working on now for our Tax Accountant, the Subaccounts are indented properly.  But I need to fix the visual display on my Chart of Accounts.

Please advise.  Thanks.

Hi, @rahmama.

Thank you for posting in the Community. I'm here to help fix the visual display on your Chart of Accounts.

Have you tried moving your mouse pointer so it touches the small diamond in front of the account you want to move? This allows the account to be dragged up, down, left or right to its new location.

You can refer to this article for more information about re-arranging the chart of accounts: Understand the QuickBooks Chart of Accounts.

I've included screenshots below for your reference.

This should help get you on the right track.

Please let me know how it goes. I'll be here to provide further help if you're still having troubles with re-arranging your accounts. Have a good one.

The solution turned out to be a simple one: somehow the view had been changed from hierarchical to flat. I clicked on hierarchical and it returned to the view I wanted. More than one way to skin a cat as they say. :smileyhappy:

How do I restore hierarchical view of COA in QuickBooks Online? The COA view is now flat and REALLY difficult to look at. Thanks all for your help!

Thanks for chiming in this thread, Shannon in Colorado.

I'd be glad to give steps on how you can change the Chart of Accounts to the hierarchical view.

Here's how:

  1. Go to List > Chart of Accounts.
  2. In the Chart of Accounts window, click the Account drop-down menu.
  3. Select Hierarchical View.
  4. Click Yes to confirm.

Please see this sample screenshot for a visual guide:

I don't have an Account drop-down menu.  I am using QBO Advanced.
