Permanently disable Modern View

How can I permanently disable Modern View? Overall, it's just more hassle. One very obvious disadvantage is the wide, grey margins around the white working area. This makes a lot of text strings such as Description, Num, and other fields unreadable, because it overflows and is cut-off. Whereas, this would not be cut off in Classic View, as Classic View takes up the full width of the screen.

Please, I do not want to use Modern View, ever. How can we just disable it permanently?

Thank you.

You can't permanently disable the ridiculous modern view.  QB can't let us have that much, if any control over our own companies, for their own selfish reasons.

Someone from QB should be along shortly to tell you to leave feedback.  Just know that you CAN leave such feedback, but it won't do any good. They don't care what we all think or want.

I understand that you preferred to use the Classic view rather than the Modern view, @bookkeeper4life. Let me share some information about the matter.

Since December 11, 2023, all Simple Start and Essential users were moved to the new invoice experience automatically and there's no option for them to switch back to the old layout. However, if you're subscribed to Plus and Advanced, you still have the option to switch back and use the older version.

On the other hand, the option to disable the Modern view is currently unavailable in QuickBooks. Nevertheless, if you want this feature added to your plan, I recommend sending a feature request to our Product Development team to consider and add this for future updates.

You can follow the steps below for your reference:

  1. Select the Gear icon, then choose Feedback.
  2. Type in your comments or product suggestions.
  3. Select Next to submit.

You can track your feature request and view the new updates released in QuickBooks by visiting our Customer Feedback page.

Furthermore, you can access this article to know more about the changes in the invoices and estimates: See what’s new with estimates and invoices in QuickBooks Online.

You can always come back to this thread if you have other questions about the new invoice layout or any other concerns. We're here to address it and help you. Have a wonderful day!

Thank you. I have already sent several feature requests related to this and have not received a reply. How can I ensure my feedback was received, and when will I get a reply?

Hi bookkeeper4life,

I appreciate you for sending feature requests.

As of now, we're unable to provide as to when those proposals will be put into realization. Though you didn't receive a reply, rest assured our product engineers have read through all your feedback.

Moreover, any updates will be posted on our blog. You may check our website from time to time to learn the latest and updated features.

Furthermore, you can check this article as your guide to know the added features when creating estimates and invoices: We’re releasing a new estimate and invoice layout.

I'm always around whenever you have concerns about managing sales transactions.

In response to the overwhelming number of people that want to ditch Modern View as the default, QBO has decided to make that the only option by the end of 2024.   It's apparent the "feedback" button goes to the dishwasher in the company cafeteria and not to the developers.  Does anyone have a line on another accounting program created by accountants and not "gamers"?

I've seen people on here suggesting Wave, but we recently discovered TaxDome as well. We're deciding while we get our books cleaned up so it will be a smooth transition. A\What about you, have you found any other good options?

QuickBooks Online has retired Classic reports, so Modern is now the only reporting experience, and the older invoice and estimate layout has been phased out in the same way. Since switching back isn't an option anymore, here's how to fix the readability problems you described so Modern view works the way you need.

Fix the cut-off columns and wasted margins in Modern reports

Several Modern report controls directly address the grey margins and truncated Description/Num fields:

  • Resize and reorder columns so Description and Num get the width they need. You can drag column borders and pull in or hide columns you don't use.
  • Adjust density/spacing to a more compact layout so more fits on screen.
  • Scroll the full page instead of a small inner box, and use Ctrl + F (Windows) or Command + F (Mac) to find anything within a long report.
  • Collapse or expand account sections to move between a high-level summary and full detail.
  • If a report still doesn't fit the way you want on screen, export to Excel or PDF for a full-width layout you fully control.

Note: a few formatting options, such as banded rows and color-coded columns, are available on QuickBooks Online Advanced and Intuit Enterprise Suite plans.

Your saved work carried over

You didn't need to rebuild anything. Saved custom reports, filters, groupings, favorites, and report schedules migrated to Modern automatically, so your month-end reports and scheduled sends keep working.

If your question was about invoices and estimates

The new invoice and estimate experience is now the standard layout, and the option to switch back to the old version has been retired as well. The same approach applies: the new layout is where all improvements now ship.

Sharing feedback

You can still send product feedback through Settings (the gear icon), then Feedback, and it does reach the product team, though to set expectations honestly, it won't restore Classic view now that it's retired. It's most useful for shaping specific Modern-view improvements, like a particular column or density behavior.
