Hi
Does anyone know what Intuit mean when they say they are discontinuing Desktop, are they removing the whole package or just stopping support?
In previous years I continued to use versions of Quickbooks desktop without support and had no problems in keeping it up to date with help from our accountant when regulations changed.
If the whole package is disappearing does anyone know of a straight replacement for desktop as the online version is rubbish by comparison and does not have the functionality I need.
Maybe they will sell it to a third party?
Hello Peter3605,
Welcome to the Community page,
So to answer your first question Quickbooks desktop is being discontinued as in the whole package is being removed and will not be supported at all, you will not be able to use it come end of January 2023.
So you will not be able to use Quickbooks desktop at all as there will be no access to it come end of January 2023. So you will need to export your data out of it and save it to your pc and move to either Quickbooks online or a different software account.
There will be no third party selling it either im afraid
So please tell me how we can migrate the attachments from QB's desktop to online as I know NO viable way of doing this as all users in the UK have a responsibility to keep records going back 7 years in case HMRC undertake an investigation.
Why can't QB's provide a read only version of QB's desktop to access the "historic" data.
What the point of backing up the data if there is no program to access it?
THIS IS RATHER SERIOUS
If you don't need to comply with MTD regulation and you are still using QBD 2020 or older versions, consider to purchase a one time license for QBD UK 2019 or 2020. Otherwise, you can migrate your data to QBD 2021 US version with the one time license.

You have to migrate the attachment files manually. Another option, consider buying a 3rd party conversion service and you can ask to migrate the attachments files as well.
I am sorry but migrating over 20K attachments to transactions is not an option and I have not found a 3rd party utility that is capable of performing the migration. Do you know of a 3rd party utility that works?
Unfortunately we haven't found any importer tool for that purpose. Our Data Conversion team has developed a mini program to import several types of data (eg attachments, estimates, purchase orders, multi currency, etc.) but we still need to half manually map the data to QuickBooks Online or other cloud based accounting apps. If you are interested in exploring buying our conversion services, please contact us in private for details.
Why couldn't users continue to use the software after January 2023. The program and database are held locally. Granted, there will be no support. Unless there is a time bomb written into the software?
Hello, Mark.
I'd like to shed light on the details regarding QuickBooks Desktop's discontinuation after January 2023.
We want to ensure our programs are compliant with the continuous and regular tax and accounting changes in the UK.
We also want to ensure that you're using a product that can be supported with the regular updates. So, we're discontinuing the Desktop version and decided to onboard QuickBooks Online.
As what Ashleigh1 mentioned, the whole package will be removed so you won't be able to use it.
In addition, I would also suggest keeping your company file just in case you want to convert to QuickBooks Online.
More details can be found here:
Our Discontinuation hub article can also help you decide on what options you have regarding the switch: QuickBooks Desktop discontinuation support hub.
If you opt to continue using QuickBooks Desktop, do you need help customising your reports to see the data you need? Check out this article for a guide: Customise reports in QuickBooks Desktop.
If you have any other concerns regarding QuickBooks Online or the Desktop version, I'll gladly hear you out.
So this is the issue - my client will migrate to QB's online on 1st April 2022 BUT they still need access to the Desktop version for historic data.
As QB's desktop is a subscription product how do they use it to access their historic data (mainly attachments that are not migrated) from 1st Feb 2023 (as I assume the subscription service will cease)?
We really need this clearing up as this matter has dragged on for too long.
The community need a clear formal statement from QBs as your support team do not have an answer.
Thanks for getting back to us, martinschultz. I know how difficult it is when you can't migrate all the data. I'm here to clear things out for you.
The standalone subscription for QuickBooks Desktop had already ended on April 30, 2021. If your client is using this, there will be no loss of access to the program. This means they can still view the data.
If they're unsure about the subscription, I'd recommend checking the Desktop invoices. Standalone receive a separate invoice each month for support only.
Once you're ready to move the desktop data to QuickBooks Online, I'd suggest checking out these resources for the detailed process:
I'm only a few clicks away if you need assistance with your other QuickBooks tasks, martinschultz. It's always my pleasure to help you out again.

If your client is still using QBD 2020, they may consider to purchase the one time license for it as a workaround from some partners. We haven't found any solution for users using QBD 2021 unless migrating to QBD US version as a workaround. They can still purchase the one time license for QBD 2021 US version. Regarding attachment migration, you should purchase a third party service to migrate their data from QBD to QBO or any other cloud based accounting app including attachments.
we use Quickbooks Desktop 2020 in the UK.
Can you explain please "consider to purchase the one time license" I thought that thah was not possible in the UK
Click my profile name and you will find our website address to send a direct message. We can help to get the one time license for it while supplies last.
Hello Community Users, We just wanted to pop in and update this thread that the date for the desktop product ending was extended and the desktop product will now discontinue on the 30 June 2023. Support will continue to be given until that date. You will not be able to use the desktop subscriptions after that date. We will be contacting users as well regarding options for viewing desktop data after that date in the very near future. Though we need to stress it will be read only. Any questions just ask, we'd be happy to help.
HI
I use QB desktop 2016 pro via a purchased CD rom and dont use any online or add on services as its a very small business with only 6 invouces a month, no payroll and no vat and ,y self assessment is done by hand not via MTD as I'm exempt from it.
will i be able to use the software after June 1st to run invoices etc? or will access to it completely stop.
Hi Oborne27, thanks for joining the Community! Access to all subscribed UK Desktop products will no longer be possible after the 30 June 2023; we're encouraging users to migrate to QuickBooks Online or an alternate software provider prior to this date. We're also releasing a Data Export Only tool that can be used to display your data for compliance purposes, and will be available to use for seven years. This is expected to be released before the end of March, and we'll be sending further updates on how to access this via email. In regards to other versions we'd advice looking at the bottom of this article at the FAQ under this header, 'will i still be able to access Quickbooks Desktop after 30th June 2023?'.
